After Arne Slot explained players who do not always get a chance will feature against Plymouth Argyle, Liverpool have inadvertently given a hint as to who some of those players could be. The Reds travel to Home Park on Sunday aiming to make the fifth round of the FA Cup.

With the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple still at large, Liverpool's next task is to navigate another cup tie, this time against Championship opposition who eliminated Premier League Brentford in the previous round. In the build-up head coach Slot has said he will change his team with a Merseyside derby to come only three nights after.

"I think it is always a tricky tie, whoever you play; an away game, their final probably. But if you play with a team who haven't played much together than it is always a bit more difficult. Even at PSV these players played a good game. So this is important for some players who don't play a lot to play, so they are ready for when we need them. We will definitely use a few we haven't used much."

Two of those he directly spoke of were the goalkeeper position, saying no.2 Caiomhin Kelleher takes precedence over Alisson Becker in the cup competitions, and James McConnell has stepped up in the wake of a four-week injury to Tyler Morton, rather than be loaned out for the second half of the season.

Now, the decisions of the Academy this weekend have helped provide another insight into who Liverpool fans may see turn out in the FA Cup this weekend.

On Friday night the Reds' under-21s played Southampton in Premier League 2 action then on Saturday morning the Under-18s hosted their counterparts from Manchester United in the Premier League U18.

Absent from both squads were Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha. Last season the former became the youngest-ever Liverpool player in FA Cup history when making his debut against Southampton at Anfield in the fourth round, aged just 16 years and 243 days.

One year on has gone on to complete five competitive appearances for the club, four of those being under Slot in the 2024/25 season.

But Nyoni's FA Cup record was snatched away from him when Ngumoha started against Accrington Stanley in this season's third round. He was aged 16 years and 135 days when handed his first Reds appearance by Slot, having only joined the club last summer from Chelsea's youth set-up.

There is big excitement around the young winger who last week netted in a stoppage-time comeback victory over his former club and then was named in the senior Champions League squad for the upcoming knockout stages.

Another name of note not playing for the academy who has also been in and around Slot's plans this term is Isaac Mabaya. The 22-year-old has trained with the first team at times since Jurgen Klopp was in charge and most recently was an unused substitute vs PSV Eindhoven.

He began his youth career as a midfielder, though like Trent Alexander-Arnold has transitioned into playing as a right back. With the vice captain injured for this weekend's clash and Conor Bradley perhaps needing to be saved for Everton on Wednesday, the team may arise for another young talent to step up.
