Liverpool fans complete quick U-turn after Darwin Nunez causes wild scenes at Brentford
Until Darwin Nunez's late heroics to secure the points, Liverpool had been left frustrated in the final third. It looked like it would be only drawing 0-0 with Brentford in the Premier League, but then the Uruguyan changed the course of the match.
Arsenal would have been hoping for some dropped points ahead of its game with Aston Villa. But then Nunez's strikes ensured that the pressure was back on the Gunners ahead of their kick-off.
Starting duo Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz missed opportunities to score in the first half while Mohamed Salah was a pale imitation of his usual self. Liverpool had 37 shots in total but failed to score until second-half stoppage time, and only eight were on target to make Mark Flekken work.

Pre-match, Arne Slot insisted that Nunez will score goals for Liverpool but it was telling that with Diogo Jota injured again, it was Diaz chosen as the number nine. When Nunez came on, he missed a big chance almost immediately and was then blasted by Trent Alexander-Arnold for shooting well over the top and wasting a promising position.
By the end, though, he had his shirt off in front of the away end celebrating wildly at having found the breakthrough. Nunez scored not once but twice to ensure Liverpool took maximum points from the fixture.
When Nunez was introduced off the bench, it would be fair to say plenty of Liverpool fans on social media weren't too pleased. Almost immediately, he missed a big chance and then caught the wrath of Trent Alexander-Arnold for blasting a shot over the bar when he should have passed to a teammate.
"Why does Arne still bring on Nunez — Gomez has more chance of scoring than him — he’s useless," one user wrote. Two goals and three points later, though, plenty of fans were forced to eat their words.
"I lost my voice screaming at them Darwin worldies," one said. "I still can't believe that happened," another added. It is safe to say a few more posts might have been deleted involving Nunez's performance. Now, the challenge for the Liverpool number nine is to prove that this wasn't a one-off.
