Liverpool FC to trademark 'Liverpool' in bid to protect club from 'inauthentic' products

Liverpool Football Club will trademark ‘Liverpool’ in a bid to protect fans from ‘inauthentic products’.

The Premier League runners-up have filed an application to the Intellectual Property Office, which they say will be ‘in the context of football products and services’.

According to BusinessLive, Liverpool will join Southampton and Chelsea in filing such a form.

A spokeswoman told the Liverpool ECHO : “We are applying to register ‘Liverpool’ as a trademark but only in the context of football products and services.

“We are not, and wouldn’t ever, seek to register ‘Liverpool’ across the board.

“This application is strictly to protect the club and supporters from those benefiting from inauthentic products.”

The club added they made the move in a bid to ensure revenue from the trademark can be reinvested at Anfield.

It is believed that they can then use that to help fund transfers - though it remains to be seen how much of an impact that will have.

But firms using ‘Liverpool’ in a genuine reference to the city will remain unaffected.

The spokeswoman added: “The benefits to the club to have this protection in place are to ensure all revenues from official products and services are channelled back into the club and this is reinvested into the team and supporting infrastructure.”
