Liverpool could snap up Lyon starlet Rayan Cherki for a cut-price fee due to the French club's financial woes, according to reports.

According to a report published by French outlet L'Equipe earlier this week, Lyon must raise €175million ($180million) in order to avoid relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of the season.

As a result of that, it is claimed by Sky Germany that Lyon has an agreement in place with Cherki that he can leave the club if an offer of €22.5million ($23million) is received.

Cherki has been hotly tipped to emerge as a top player ever since he made his senior debut for Lyon as a 16-year-old in 2019, and the chance to sign him for a relatively small transfer fee could alert the Reds, who have previously been linked with the now 21-year-old.

Lyon was slapped with provisional relegation to Ligue 2 in November last year and banned from signing any new players during the January transfer window because of financial mismanagement.

The National Directorate of Management Control, which monitors and overseeing the accounts of professional soccer clubs in France, was responsible for handing down those punishments.

However, the relegation won't be enforced if Lyon can demonstrate a much healthier financial outlook by the end of the season, and to do that, player sales will almost certainly be necessary.

Maxence Caqueret, Gift Orban and Jeffinho have all been sold by Lyon this month, generating $30million in transfer fees.

Sky in Germany reports that several Bundesliga clubs are monitoring Cherki's situation this month, and while Liverpool isn't credited with an interest at this moment in time, he could be a relatively cheap option in attack if it becomes apparent that the club will not be able to hold on to Mohamed Salah beyond the end of the season.
