Liverpool's Academy teams suffered a disappointing weekend as both the under-21s and U18s fell to defeat. The Reds' U21s were beaten 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League 2 on Sunday despite dominating the game for long periods.

However, an inability to take their opportunities saw the visitors leak twice late on through Rio Kyerematen and Oliver Irow to leave Barry Lewtas's side without a win in the competition for approaching three months.

"It's taking the good moments of the game that we have and trying to put them into a winning performance – that's what we're lacking at the minute if I'm going to be honest," said Lewtas. "We missed too many chances and then in the end the two goals we offered near the end were gifts.

"We're probably hurting ourselves more than the opposition but we played against a good team. It was a well-contested game.

"But for what we've been trying to do this week and the work we've done, I think to perform like that and then to come away again with a loss and without a goal is very disappointing."

Meanwhile, a difficult season for Liverpool in the U18 Premier League North continued with a 4-1 defeat to a physically strong Derby County side on Saturday.

Joe Bradshaw netted his fifth goal in his last five appearances on 27 minutes after Derby had stormed into a two-goal lead through Owen Eames and Justin Oguntolu.

But any hope of a comeback disappeared with the Reds conceding twice more around the hour mark, Oguntolu netting his second before substitute Charles Ebuka struck.

Liverpool U21s are next in Premier League 2 action on Friday, February 7 when they travel to Southampton (kick-off 7pm), while the U18s play in the U18 Premier League Cup at Chelsea next Saturday (kick-off 11am).
