Liverpool issues Merseyside Derby weather warning statement to fans on eve of Everton trip
Liverpool seemingly expects Saturday's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park to go ahead as scheduled, after it issued a statement advising fans to take extra care when travelling to the stadium for the match.
An amber weather warning has been issued, with Storm Darragh set to hit the west coast of England in the early hours of Saturday morning. Amber weather warnings mean that severe weather is likely to disrupt people's travel plans, while there is also potential risk to life and property. The west coast of England, including Liverpool, could experience gusts of wind of up to 80mph on Saturday.
Wales looks set to experience the worst conditions, with red weather warnings — the most serious type — issued in some areas of the country. All soccer and rugby matches scheduled to take place in Wales on Sunday have been cancelled, including a Championship fixture between Cardiff City and Watford.
For now, Everton vs Liverpool seems set to go ahead as scheduled, with the Merseyside clubs issuing a joint statement on the eve of the match imploring fans to take extra special care when travelling to the stadium.
The statement said: "Supporters attending Saturday's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park are advised to allow extra time for travel and remain alert to Met Office weather warnings. An amber severe wind warning has been issued by the Met Office for Merseyside from 1am GMT on Saturday, with wind gusts of 60mph to 70mph likely. The warning for wind is expected to remain in place until 6am on Sunday.
"Given the weather warning, fans are advised to allow extra time for their journey and take extra care. Supporters are also advised to keep a close eye on travel and weather guidance in their area to assist with travel planning for the Premier League fixture."
