Liverpool's trip to Goodison Park in the Premier League has been postponed with the final match at Everton's historic ground set to take place later in the season because of adverse weather conditions.

"Liverpool FC can confirm today’s Premier League fixture against Everton at Goodison Park, scheduled for a 12.30pm kick-off, has been postponed," a statement from the club posted on its official website confirmed. "This is due to severe weather and high winds, which have also resulted in severe travel disruption in and around Merseyside.

"Following a Safety Advisory Group meeting this morning at Goodison Park, attended by officials from both clubs, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council, it was decided that due to the risk to safety in the local area, and the amber severe wind warning that remains in place until 6am on Sunday, today’s match is postponed on safety grounds."

"We appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, but the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance," the statement concluded. "Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture, including ticketing, will be announced in due course."

Heading into the weekend, there was a strong risk that the match could be postponed. Travel across Merseyside had been disrupted and an amber weather warning for wind was issued by the Met Office.

On Saturday morning, Merseyrail services between Hunts Cross and Liverpool Central were suspended with a bus replacement service put in place. The wind and the rain are predicted to get worse before they improve.

Very high winds have been forecast throughout the day. Today's racing at Aintree had already been called off when the decision on the Merseyside derby was made, while there is flooding on the M56 motorway. An amber weather warning (for an "increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt your plans") remains in place.
