Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard suffers new Saudi setback as Al-Ettifaq issues official statement
Steven Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq have been dealt another significant setback with influential midfielder Seko Fofana cutting short his loan spell to join French outfit Rennes. Rumblings of Fofana's departure surfaced towards the end of 2024, and now it's official.
The Ivory Coast star initially joined Gerrard's squad in Saudi Arabia nearly a year ago, arriving on a temporary deal from Al-Nassr for the first half of 2024. Fofana made quite the impact during his stint, netting two goals and providing three assists, prompting an extension of his loan into the 2024/25 season. This term, he's featured in 11 matches in the Saudi Pro League.
His standout performance came in a crucial 2-1 victory over Al-Khaleej in early December, easing some of the pressure on Gerrard after a run of nine league games without a win. However, that match appears to have been Fofana's swansong with the Liverpool icon.

On the first day of the new year, Al-Ettifaq confirmed Fofana's return to Al-Nassr with a statement: "Ettifaq announces the termination of the loan agreement of the player Seko Fofana, who was loaned from Al-Nassr FC during the last summer transfer window, by mutual consent between both parties.
"The club extends its sincere thanks to the player for his time with the team, wishing him the best of luck in his next challenge. Ettifaq also expresses its gratitude and appreciation of the board of directors and the executives of Al-Nassr FC for their continued and professional cooperation."
The seasoned midfielder didn't linger in the Middle East, striking a deal for a return to French football with Rennes. His exit leaves a sizeable void in the heart of Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq side, especially considering the ups and downs during Fofana's stint.
While Gerrard holds onto his managerial post, Ettifaq did confirm the departure of both Mark Allen and Dean Holden, paving the way for Michael Beale, Gerrards one-time right-hand man, to step in. After enjoying their winter respite, Ettifaq will jump back into the fray next Friday, facing Al Kholood in a critical league match.
