Liverpool made one big mistake vs Ipswich - but they now have new player you need to win the league
It was a routine win for Liverpool against Ipswich, but it was a disappointing game to watch. Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted we got the three points.
But Ipswich, I understand the predicament that they’re in and that they have just been thumped by Manchester City, but I thought they would show a little more invention. Let’s be honest, 4-1 flattered them. But Liverpool didn’t play at their best either. We did alright, we did enough. Just did enough, though we coasted it. It was a little bit like a practice game at times, attack vs defence.
The only downside, we shouldn’t be negative but conceding off a corner, to lose a goal late on like that. I felt for the goalkeeper really because he only had to make a couple of saves, and he made them well, but still doesn’t get his clean sheet.

I think what happened there was when you make three substitutions, as we did, we brought on relatively small players in Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa. When you make up on goals after those substitutions, you get a bit of a mix-up.
It was a mismatch between Harvey and the defender that scored, Jacob Greaves. That should be looked at for future reference because it was a mistake.
You can’t have Harvey going on and taking over from someone like Gakpo, who is bigger and stronger, and marking their big defender off a corner.
But that was the only downside on the day. I’m sure the defensive coach, set pieces coach, whatever he is, I’m sure he will be disappointed with that. I think it was a little bit of an oversight.
But going forward, it is a warning as we don’t want to start conceding from corners.
Szoboszlai stepping up
The midfield was good again, having also been great against Brentford. All three of them played well.
It was a super goal from Szoboszlai. If you want to win championships, you need goals from midfield. You look at the great Liverpool sides of the past, they’ve always had a good goalscoring midfielder who will get 10+ goals.
I think Arne Slot has tweaked it so that Szoboszlai is getting more of an advanced role. He has got it in him to score goals, he has a great shot on him, as he proved on Saturday. He needs to get in there more. If he does that, he’ll score more goals without a doubt.
But Gravenberch was probably the best out of the three midfielders. He’s the one you need to get on the ball in those little pockets and holes because when he turns and runs, no-one is going to stop him. He is such a danger.
I was doing the commentary on Saturday and for the first 25 minutes, Cody Gakpo couldn’t do anything right! Then all of a sudden he turns up and after that he was brilliant. Gets his two goals and I was delighted for him.
You have to get goals from that position, his position as a left-winger. He’ll get more goals than Luis Diaz. Diaz will be more of a winger, but Gakpo will get more goals from that area, spreading them across the front three.
It’s also good when the other forwards get their share of goals to compliment Mo. It was a great finish from him too.
He had a couple of chances before that that were probably a little bit easier, but it was a superb take. A great ball into the box for him, but what a great take. We’ve got to keep him fit, it’s such a positive to have him in your team.
Happy Anniversary, Aldo!
I’ve seen that today is the anniversary of me joining Liverpool back in 1987. Wow, 38 years.
It was like Christmas Day as a kid when I signed from Oxford. It was something that I had always wanted from the very first moment I went to Anfield in the mid-sixties.
I went home and away and loved the team, loved the club. I loved Shankly, Roger Hunt and the sixties team. I loved Keegan and the seventies team.
I lived the dream. I was one of the lucky ones who lived the dream.
