Curtis Jones is set to miss Liverpool’s trip to PSV Eindhoven after sitting out the Reds’ opening training session on Tuesday, but Arne Slot was given a major boost with Joe Gomez back training ahead of the match.

Jones was absent for Arne Slot’s side as they beat Ipswich Town last weekend, having limped off at half-time in their Champions League win over Lille. Meanwhile, Gomez hasn’t featured since injuring his hamstring in the 5-0 victory away at West Ham United at the end of last month.

Diogo Jota, however, remains absent from training after suffering a muscle injury, with the forward and Jones instead working inside in the gym at the AXA Training Centre.

The Portuguese has missed Liverpool’s last three matches after picking up an issue away at Nottingham Forest - having equalised for the Reds after being introduced as a substitute.

Before facing Lille, Slot suggested Jota could be back earlier than Gomez, so Liverpool will be hopeful the striker can step up his training in the near future.

"Maybe Jota [will be back] a bit earlier than Joe,” he said. “Both of them are expected to be back with us in weeks rather than months.

"But I've said many times before that the last stage of rehab is the most difficult one, or the one that sometimes [can] add a few days or not. It's clear that we are expecting them to be back with us in the upcoming weeks.

"It is always difficult to say exactly how long it is. Both of them are not going to be out for months, that's for sure, as long as the rehab goes as planned."

A plethora of academy players were also involved in open training, hinting that Slot could name a number in his travelling squad.

Kieran Morrison, Isaac Mabaya, Trent Kone-Doherty, Wellity Lucky, Amara Nallo, James Norris, Dominic Corness, James McConnell, Tommy Pilling and Rio Ngumoha were all involved in Tuesday's session, along with regulars Jayden Danns and Trey Nyoni.

However, the majority went off to train separately after the initial warm-up, with Ngumoha ineligible to play in this season's Champions League regardless.

Having made five changes to his side against Ipswich, Slot is expected to rotate again for Liverpool’s clash with PSV.

The Dutchman will offer a fresh update in Eindhoven at his pre-match press conference, which is scheduled to get underway at 6.45pm (UK time).
