A handful of Liverpool signings have joined the club after catching the eye by scoring against the Reds in recent years. Darwin Nunez and Takumi Minamino are perhaps the most obvious examples, with the pair helping convince Jurgen Klopp to bring them to Anfield after impressing against his side in the Champions League.

Sadio Mane, Gini Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all managed the same feat to attract the German’s attention, while Mohamed Salah also scored against Klopp’s Liverpool in a pre-season friendly in the summer of 2016.

And even when not scoring, the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota all did enough to sow a seed in Reds minds prior to their own switches to Anfield.

After scoring against Liverpool for Lille on Tuesday night, could Jonathan David become the latest name to be added to such a list?

The Canada international was on the Reds’ radar in the summer of 2020, only for them to opt for Jota instead. He would instead join the Ligue 1 outfit in a €30m deal, and has gone on to enjoy an eye-catching five years with the French side.

His strike against Liverpool was his 18th of the season from his 31 games, with the forward on track to enjoy the most prolific campaign of his career. The 25-year-old now boasts 102 goals for the club from 214 appearances.

A prolific goalscorer in France, he inevitably is attracting plenty of interest ahead of his contract expiring and being available on a free transfer this summer.

He continues to be linked with the Reds, with his inclusion against Liverpool on Tuesday a small sub-plot to proceedings. Yet left rather isolated upfront, Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler was not particularly impressed by the Canadian.

“You’re not gaging him on tonight’s performance,” he said on Amazon Prime Sport. “I don’t think any Lille or Liverpool players really stood out.

“You don’t sign a player on the back of one performance anyway. It was tough for him, Liverpool as much as they weren’t unbelievable, they still did a job.”

However, fellow former Reds striker Daniel Sturridge praised David for still getting his name on the scoresheet.

“He was able to still score,” he said. “He was defending most of the game, but when you position yourself in the right place, right time, that’s something you can’t teach. So, fair play.”

David actually had a hand in all three goals on Tuesday night. While he netted Lille’s equaliser, slotting home a rebound from a Kostas Tsimikas block, he was the player dispossessed by the Greek in the build-up to Liverpool’s opener.

Meanwhile, his headed clearance from a corner fell to Harvey Elliott for the Reds’ winner.

Supporters will have hardly left Anfield talking about David as they did of Nunez and Minamino when facing them as opposing players in years gone by. But while he had little to feed off offensively, beyond his goal, his willingness to press and his defensive work-rate - which were very much on show - is at least something that would be admired by Slot and Liverpool bosses.

Regardless, as Fowler points out, you don’t sign a player off the back of one game anyway. If he has remained on the Reds’ radar in recent years, the possibility of signing him on a free transfer could still prove tempting if they look to strengthen their attacking ranks in the summer.

David was full of praise for Liverpool at least after coming up against them in the Champions League, lauding them as ‘the best team in the world’.

“Very good team," he said following the game. "I think they might be the best team in the world at the moment.

"Tonight is one more goal [for me]. I'm happy I managed to score but we didn't manage to get the three points."

David’s Anfield audition might have proven to be somewhat underwhelming, for him and curious onlookers, but as a player, he still boasts traits that are attractive to Liverpool bosses.

And ever the opportunists in the transfer market, the chance to sign a prolific, pacey, versatile forward on a Bosman transfer - who is still only 25 years old - remains a rare market opportunity.

Meanwhile, question marks over Jota's injury record and the futures of the likes of Nunez and Federico Chiesa could create an Anfield vacancy.

David was left impressed by Liverpool on Tuesday. The question is, have the Reds been left suitably impressed enough by the Lille forward over the years to want to add him to Slot’s ranks now that he has become available.
