Feeling nervous yet? I know I’m not feeling as confident as I was a couple of weeks ago.

Liverpool is of course still top of the Premier League, and let’s face it, we would have all snapped someone’s hand off to be in this position after hearing Jurgen Klopp announce he would be leaving around this time last year.

Still, it hasn’t been the start to 2025 we all hoped for. Just one win since the turn of the year - against League Two side Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup - has been a disappointment, but at least Liverpool’s rivals haven’t been able to make up much ground. That was, until last night.

Arsenal still doesn’t look all that convincing at the moment, but they did what matters most after beating Tottenham in the North London derby. That cuts Liverpool’s lead down to four points and means the Reds are looking over the shoulder a bit more now.

It’s almost certainly between Liverpool and the Gunners for the title now - albeit, Nottingham Forest is still lurking menacingly. Based on what we’ve seen so far this season, neither team will run away with it, making every win precious for Arne Slot’s side.

The Dutchman has worked wonders since coming in to replace Klopp, but there are just a few signs that he could do with a bit of help from higher up now. What was, not too long ago, the league’s meanest defense is now looking much more vulnerable, and it could be just one injury away to either Ibrahima Konate or Virgil van Dijk before it’s in panic stations.

It’s no surprise then that former Red Jamie Carragher has nailed his colors to the mast and demanded that Liverpool makes a move in the January window.

“Liverpool should’ve won tonight, but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win,” he wrote on X after the draw with Forest on Tuesday. “But the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone. Always look likely to concede. Buy a defender!!!!”

Carragher has caused some controversy recently among supporters, especially when it comes to his thoughts on Mohamed Salah, but there can be no denying that he’s bang on the money here.

Liverpool has a clear advantage over Arsenal in attack, with the likes of Salah, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo almost guaranteeing goals every time they step out onto the pitch. The same can’t be said for Kai Havertz and Co.

But if there is one area where the Reds look vulnerable, it is in defense, and that could ultimately cost them the title. We’re already at the stage of Wataru Endo having to fill in from time to time at center-back, and as well as the Japan international has done, it’s not a situation that should be sustained through a title challenge.

Bringing in a new defender is an absolute must now. If FSG doesn’t act, it risks throwing the title away from what was an unbelievable position.
