A much-changed Liverpool ended the first stage of the Champions League with a 3-2 defeat at PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday evening. The unrecognisable Reds had twice led in the first half through a Cody Gakpo penalty and Harvey Elliott strike only to ultimately fall to their third loss of the season in all competitions.

The result means that, with Barcelona having drawn at home to Atalanta, Arne Slot's side still finished top of the 36-team table having already sealed progress directly to the last 16 with a game to play.

The ECHO was in Holland and here we rate the performance of the Liverpool players in the Philips Stadion.

Caoimhin Kelleher 6

No chance with PSV first but a little unconvincing when dealing with the second and third goals, although definitely not to blame for either.

Conor Bradley 5

Started slowly but soon began to crunch into tackles and offer himself going forward down the right. Tough time defensively, though, and second and third PSV goals came down his side.

Jarell Quansah 6

Willing to bring ball out from the back, but hoodwinked for leveller and didn’t clear properly in build-up to third. Kept going second half as the only recognised senior central defender in team.

Andy Robertson 6

Playing at centre-back, his positioning made sure he wasn’t overly-exposed by PSV looking to go long but could have done better with their first. Booked and subbed.

Kostas Tsimikas 6

Steady enough at left-back and provided aerial cover for Robertson, although distribution not always consistent.

James McConnell 8

One good thrusting run first half and always looked to move Liverpool forward while not shy to get stuck in. Maintained level throughout and can expect more minutes to come.

Wataru Endo 5

Ability in the air useful early on but lost possession for second PSV equaliser. Wayward after that but steadied slightly when shifting to centre-back and assuming armband.

Federico Chiesa 7

Not everything came off for the Italian during an all-action performance, but good pressure won penalty and parried shot prompted second. Bit greedy when fashioning good break second half.

Harvey Elliott 6

Saw plenty of the ball in early stages but then flitted in and out of game before notching Liverpool’s second. Second half slightly more prominent, largely after moving to the right. Booked.

Cody Gakpo 6

Returning to his former club, a quiet outing but still managed to notch opener from spot and have hand in Liverpool second. Subbed.

Jayden Danns 5

A real learning curve for the teenager, who struggled to keep hold of possession and wasn’t involved enough first half. Could have done with more protection from the referee, though. Subbed.

Tyler Morton (for Gakpo 51) 6

Took a while to become involved in the number 10 role and one great defensive tackle. Booked.

Trey Nyoni (for Robertson 64) 5

Unable to make much impression.

Amara Nallo (for Danns 83)

Senior debut for the 18-year-old centre-back ruined by red card four minutes later.
