Arsenal could be handed a highly unlikely Premier League title race boost this weekend. The Gunners head into their weekend clash away at Manchester United after surprisingly thumping PSV 7-1 in the Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday evening in the Netherlands.

Just two goals and one victory from their last four games saw that result catch many off guard with Martin Odegaard bagging a brace and appearing back to his best while the front three all found the back of the net. If Arsenal can channel that cutting edge into the Premier League, the title race could be back on.

24 hours after their dominant triumph away in Europe, Liverpool endured a very different evening with Paris Saint-Germain causing them huge problems. Arne Slot's side were able to hang on however and ultimately departed the French capital with a narrow 1-0 lead in the tie.

That challenging encounter and a stunning Liverpool points deduction warning could be the turning point for Arsenal with a scenario for this weekend that was impossible to imagine, now appearing a little more feasible. With that said, football.london has taken a look at the latest Gunners headlines.

Liverpool points deduction truth

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has suggested that points deductions could be dished out if fines do not have the desired effect after Liverpool boss Arne Slot was charged by the FA.

"I would like to see referees at the final whistle moving towards the tunnel rather than standing in the middle looking for handshakes and any complimentary comments," he told Football Insider.

"This will, I feel, reduce any tensions that have built up in the game. I hope that the level of fines will receive a more controlled approach by the manager and his assistant. If these fines going forward do not have the desired effect then we may see points deductions coming into play."

football.london says: In reality, points deductions actually being handed out for anything other than financial breaches in this era of football is extremely difficult to imagine.

While it has happened before, only a few points were taken away from the teams punished and therefore if that highly unlikely scenario does play out, it is unlikely to make a huge difference in the title race - barring a significant collapse by Liverpool.

It is worth noting however, the steeper sanction was given to the team involved in more than one huge brawl and with the Reds having been involved in one after the draw against Everton, another of those before the end of the season could result in a much more significant punishment as opposed to just a fine.

Title race hope

Liverpool could go 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday afternoon with Arsenal in action the following day.

Despite Harvey Elliot bagging a late winner for Liverpool against PSG on Wednesday evening, Slot's first-choice defenders and midfielders worked tirelessly to keep out the French side and that may mean significant rotation takes place against Southampton this weekend.

football.london says: If it was a more challenging opponent, there would be some serious hope in north London that Liverpool could drop points given their excursions in Paris earlier that week.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, it is the Premier League's bottom side heading to Anfield in a few days time. Former goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will be in between the sticks however, and he certainly has the capabilities of delivering another vintage display on Merseyside exactly as he did in April 2023.

Nonetheless, with a second leg against the Parisians to come and therefore mass rotation likely, there is a world in which Liverpool do not win and suddenly the gap could be closed down to seven points in mid-March.
