Liverpool under-18s produced a remarkable comeback for the second successive weekend to become only the second team to deny Manchester United in the league this season. Winger Tyler Martin scored in the 89th minute as Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's side came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in the U18 Premier League North clash at the Academy in Kirkby on Saturday afternoon.

A goal from 17-year-old striker Josh Sonni-Lambie - who penned his first professional contract earlier in the week - had earlier brought the Reds back into the game with the home side indebted to a string of second-half saves from goalkeeper Bailey Hall.

The result comes a week after Liverpool came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Chelsea in the U18 Premier League Cup, with a team missing several regulars putting in an impressive showing against a United side that had won all bar one game in the division.

With Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes and Michael Thomas among those watching from the sidelines, United went ahead on 17 minutes when Liverpool failed to properly clear a corner and Victor Musa stretched to loop a header over Hall.

Sonni-Lambie then struck wide from the edge of the area but United's greater height and physicality meant they continued to dominate, and Musa scored again on 28 minutes with a header from a cross.

Liverpool pulled a goal back two minutes before the interval on the counter-attack when, after being released by Joe Bradshaw's searching pass, Sonni-Lambie cut in off the left and ran across the United defence before picking the right moment to finish confidently.

That sparked the Reds into life and immediately after the break Afolami Onanuga saw a volley saved and then dragged the ball narrowly wide after a good run by Joe Bradshaw into the United area.

Hall, though, had to make a superb save to keep out a header from Godwill Kukoni at a corner midway through the second half and then twice prevented Musa from claiming a hat-trick. Onanuga missed a chance to level late on before a corner from Joe Upton found Martin just inside the area to hit a shot that was deflected in.

Meanwhile, Liverpool U21s suffered frustration on Friday night when an equaliser deep into additional time prevented them from earning Premier League 2 victory at Southampton.

The Reds has gone ahead through Kieran Morrison's sixth goal of the season midway through the first half, but were pegged back in the 95th minute when Max Fry netted for the hosts.

Most of Liverpool U18s are next in action on Tuesday when an U19 side are in Stuttgart for their UEFA Youth League play-off (kick-off 1pm), while the U21s host Chelsea in Premier League 2 on Sunday week (kick-off 2pm).
