Liverpool quality shines through as Stanley's FA Cup run comes to an end
Stanley weren’t able to pull off a classic FA Cup shock as Liverpool proved too strong in a 4-0 victory at Anfield.
Diogo Jota opened the scoring after a quick breakaway and Trent Alexander-Arnold doubled the lead on the stroke of half time with an excellent strike into the top corner.
Stanley had a couple of good moments after the break, with Josh Woods and Donald Love both going close, before substitutes Jayden Danns and Federico Chiesa wrapped up the result.
Doolan named an unchanged side from the victory at Colchester last weekend, while Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Jota, Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez were all among the Liverpool starters.
There was plenty of noise booming from the away end, with around 4,700 Stanley supporters packed in, as the players made their way onto the pitch.
The first chance came when Konstantinos Tsimikas’ cross was steered back across to Nunez, who failed to keep his header down from close range.
Billy Crellin then made a smart stop with his feet to keep out Alexander-Arnold’s low drive from the edge of the area.
Stanley’s best moment of the first half came when Nelson Khumbeni sent Shaun Whalley down the left, but Tsimikas made an important header clearance with Tyler Walton waiting at the far post.
Wataru Endo sent a diving header wide from a corner and a slight sense of frustration started to creep into the Anfield crowd, but then came the breakthrough.
Stanley won a free kick in a decent crossing position but Liverpool won back possession and executed a ruthless counter attack. Alexander-Arnold sent Nunez down the right and he squared for Jota, who was left with a simple finish from close range.
Harvey Elliott fired straight at Crellin before Tyler Morton sent a dipping strike over the bar from distance.
The second came on the stroke of half time and it was a moment of magic from Alexander-Arnold, who found the top corner with a superb strike from outside the box.
Doolan made a couple of changes at the break, with Alex Henderson and Liam Coyle replacing Khumbeni and Ash Hunter.
Nunez threatened to add a third straight after the restart but Crellin stood tall and made a good stop from an angle.
At the other end, Josh Woods nearly pulled one back but his shot cannoned off the crossbar after a well worked short corner.
Doolan opted to make another double change, with Seamus Conneely and Connor O’Brien joining the fray.
Stanley had another chance to get one back but Donald Love couldn’t keep his header down after getting on the end of Whalley’s cross.
Liverpool made it three with 15 minutes to go. Crellin initially made a fine save to deny Chiesa but Danns made no mistake from the rebound.
Chiesa almost added a fourth in the latter stages. The Italy international’s shot had Crellin beaten but struck the foot of the post.
Whalley had one last chance to send the away end into raptures after finding space beyond the Liverpool backline, but his strike was held by Kelleher.
Chiesa managed to get on the scoresheet late on, squeezing a low shot past Crellin and in off the woodwork.
