Options are starting to present themselves in Mohamed Salah's future as a top Saudi Pro League waits in the wings - and Liverpool Echo readers in our comments section want to remind Liverpool owners FSG about the "stakes" in their ongoing contract standoff with their star players.

Having failed to secure his signature last year, the club now risk Salah leaving on a free transfer, and he is now able to speak to other teams in Europe and beyond. The Saudi Pro League lights failed to lure Salah away the last time they tried in 2023, but they may come back to haunt Liverpool.

Al-Hilal are seeking a replacement for former Barcelona and Brazil legend Neymar, and Salah, who is still rightfully called a world superstar, fits the bill. Liverpool turned down a blockbuster bid of £150 million 18 months ago by another Pro League side, Al-Ittihad.

Salah's preference is to remain at Liverpool, but he will not find himself short of suitors if things don't work out. The club also need to figure out who would succeed Salah as their star forward - whether it be now or in the future.

The situation continues to frustrate fans. Reader Sifellows1968 says: “You do start to wonder what is going on at Liverpool. No movement on the three contracts, Elliott potentially leaving, squad depth starting to catch us up. Yet FSG will say we are top of the league.

"You can see Mo and Trent leaving now, VvD potentially staying. FSG will hope we win the league, avoid paying big wages for Mo and Trent and rely on younger players next season. We are not under PSR constraints but maybe we win the league and it’s goodbye to the three.”

Commenter RedLes writes: “Cannot believe that FSG have not said anything with regard to the contract negotiations regarding Virgil van Dijk, Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. I see three world class players walking away at the end of the season and we get nothing for them, or are FSG hoping for big offers for the three amigos in this transfer window?

"It's my opinion that all three contract situations are causing unwanted problems on the field and I really believe that FSGs handling of the situation will cost us the title and the loss of three top players.”

Lovemedo says: “Come on, FSG. Sort it out, ASAP. It's a shame FSG is dragging out this situation when the PL and CL are at stake. Extend Salah, VvD, and TAA for two more years and bring one reinforcement in January.”

ScouseIan fears for a worst case scenario: “How about the scenario where he signs for a rival in the Premier League? We need to get him and Van Dijk signed up ASAP.”

Racker thinks it would be a bad move for Salah's legacy: “Oh well, good luck to him if he goes and plays in a 3rd rate league, and wins useless trophies that no one will remember.”
