Liverpool sent transfer message after Arne Slot 'saved FSG millions' - 'If he's available'
Liverpool legend John Aldridge has urged his former club to sign someone before the winter transfer window closes on Monday — to give Arne Slot another boost ahead of his side's Premier League title run-in.
So far at Anfield, the only player who has been bought during Slot's tenure who is at the club now is Federico Chiesa, with Giorgi Mamardashvili lined up to come in during the summer of 2025. Chiesa, of course, has barely featured, making only eight appearances to date since he was purchased from Juventus.
"Ryan Gravenberch has saved the owners a lot of money this season," Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool ECHO column. "He has saved them a fortune! They were prepared to bring Martin Zubimendi in and spend a lot on him. For it to work out how it has for them has been a bonus.

"But I’ll say it again, before the end of January, I do think that we need to bring someone in. If we bring someone in to feel his feet before next season, who is already as good as what we’ve got, then go and buy him — whether it’s a full-back, an out-and-out goalscorer, or a superb midfielder.
"You’ve got to build on what you’ve got. Go and get him, go and get him. If he’s available out there, make sure we have another insurance policy to keep us where we are at the top of the table."
Liverpool.com says: Left-back, holding midfield cover for Gravenberch, and a new number nine should all be on the agenda this year for the Reds but those additions are all considerably more likely in the summer — and they always have been. Many more options are usually on the move then rather than mid-season when clubs are desperate to avoid losing key men.
Doing that kind of business in January is possible, as Cody Gakpo, Virgil van Dijk and Luis Diaz have proven in the past, but only where specific opportunities emerge. Signing someone just for a short-term boost just isn't the way Liverpool operates.
