Calvin Ramsay is expected to join Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock on loan from Liverpool for the rest of the season. The Scotland international saw a season-long loan switch to Wigan Athletic cut short earlier this month.

The 21-year-old joined the Reds from Aberdeen for an initial fee worth just over £4m back in June 2022, but his progress since then has been derailed by injuries.

The right-back is now set to return north of the border for the remainder of the season. Departing on a straight loan deal, it is understood that Kilmarnock made the strongest pitch to offer Ramsay much-needed game-time amid reported interest from League One and League Two sides in the full-back.

The presence of Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes also helped open the door to such a temporary switch.

Ramsay was coming through the ranks at Aberdeen when the 53-year-old was still in charge at Pittodrie, though the Liverpool defender made his senior debut not long after McInnes’ departure in March 2021.

Ramsay has made two appearances for the Reds to date after his first season at Anfield was initially disrupted by a back injury uncovered in his medical. He then missed the second half of the campaign after undergoing knee surgery.

A season-long loan switch to Championship side Preston North End was cut short after just two appearances in January 2024, while he would feature four times for Bolton Wanderers in the second half of last season.

Game-time was also limited at Wigan, with the defender only starting five of his 12 appearances for the Latics. He returned to Liverpool after not being included in a League One matchday squad since the end of October.

Ramsay will not look to reignite his career back in his native Scotland after his previous loan switches did not fare as planned, before returning to Liverpool in the summer.

Kilmarnock currently sit ninth in the Scottish Premiership table after 23 games played. They have already been eliminated from the Europa League, Europa Conference League and Scottish League Cup.

However, their Scottish Cup campaign will get underway away at Celtic next weekend in what could offer Ramsay a mouth-watering opportunity to make his Kilmarnock debut.

The Reds could find themselves in the market for a new right-back come the end of the season, as the uncertainty regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future continues.

The Liverpool vice-captain, who scored in Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup, remains out of contract at the end of the season and is of interest to Real Madrid. The La Liga giants had an approach for the full-back rejected by the Reds on New Year’s Eve.

Now free to discuss pre-contract agreements with overseas clubs, it remains to be seen if Alexander-Arnold will sign a new contract with Liverpool or instead move on. Conor Bradley is his current deputy at Anfield having forced his way into the Reds first team after an impressive season on loan at Bolton Wanderers in 2022/23.
