Two Liverpool supporters were left with faces as red as the club’s famous shirts after missing their side’s Champions League win over Genk... because they accidentally went to Gent!

In a story almost too ridiculous to be true, Belgian website sporza.be reports that the two fans were unable to see the their side cruise to a 4-1 win over the current Belgian champions after finding themselves over 93 miles away in the wrong city.

The two were apparently spotted in Gent searching for the Luminus Arena with half an hour to go until kick off before the scale of their mistake became clear.

Realising their monumental error, the two fans sheepishly went to a local cafe to watch the match, taking a slightly embarrassed photo afterwards.

Confusion surely arose from the similar spelling but also due to the fact Gent also have a team playing in the Belgian Pro League.

Having caught wind of the story, the team from the Flemish region of the country have instead invited the pair to their Europa League tie against Wolfsburg at the Ghelamco Arena on Thursday evening.

Two goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain before Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah added to scoreline helped Liverpool to a 4-1 win despite Stephen Odey’s late consolation for the hosts.

The result leaves last year’s winners second in Group E, a point behind Napoli.
