Liverpool is among several of Europe’s elite clubs to be linked with a January move for Barcelona star Dani Olmo.

In a bizarre situation, the summer signing may not be able to play for Barca in the second half of the 2024/25 season due to issues related to his registration. The Catalan club only registered Olmo for the first half of the campaign due to inability to meet La Liga's wage cap restrictions.

Barcelona has since seen two attempts to register the Spanish international for the second half of the season rejected, meaning he may be ineligible to play for the club from 1 January. If Barcelona cannot sort the paperwork in time, Olmo would be able to secure a free transfer in January.

That, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, has alerted the attention of several teams ‘who are closely monitoring the situation’.

Arsenal is said to be the first team to register its interest, as have Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City. The latter considered a move for Olmo over the summer but opted against matching his sell-out clause.

Elsewhere, Chelsea and Tottenham ‘have also made enquiries’, while Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig are monitoring the unusual circumstances at the Nou Camp.

Deportivo Mundo adds Olmo wants to remain with Barcelona, but the situation could be taken out of his hands if an agreement can’t be reached.

Olmo returned to La Liga in the summer, a decade after he left Barcelona’s storied youth academy to forge his own path. He spent six years at Dinamo Zagreb, before joining RB Leipzig, where he won two DFB-Pokals.

The 26-year-old played a pivotal role for Spain at last summer’s European Championships. He was joint scorer at the tournament in Germany and netted in the last-16, quarter-final and semi-final wins, and also played the full 90 minutes as Spain beat England in the final.

Olmo has made 11 league appearances for Barcelona since his summer move and has netted an impressive five goals from midfield. However, he is yet to establish himself as a crucial player in Hansi Flick’s side and has not completed a 90-minute match.
