Liverpool transfer target set for new Anfield audition as huge decision nears over next club
Liverpool will take on Lille tonight in the penultimate game of the Champions League group stage, with former Reds’ target Jonathan David expected to start.
The striker was on Liverpool’s shortlist in the summer 2020 transfer window along with Ismaila Sarr, and eventual signing Diogo Jota.
David has netted 17 goals with five assists already this campaign, as his Lille side are in the top eight of the Champions League table, and on a 20-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Since the 2020 window David has only missed three league games, and has scored over 20 goals in each of the last two seasons.
In the same period, Jota has missed a staggering 94 games with several injuries and hasn’t recorded a 20-goal season since joining the club.
The two-time Canadian footballer of the year’s contract is up at the end of the season, once again sparking transfer rumours, and with a number of premier league clubs said to be interested, David has a chance to impress on the biggest stage at Anfield.
The two sides have only met twice previously, as the Reds’ progressed through a Europa League round of 16 tie as they won 3-1 in the 2009/10 season.
Notably the only Lille player to score in the tie was a young Eden Hazard who later got a move to a big Premier League club.
Tomorrow night will be David’s first appearance at Anfield, and the stakes are extremely high for the French side, as anything short of three points will almost guarantee them to drop out of the illustrious top eight of the table.
Liverpool currently sit top of the Champions League table and have won all 6 games played, meaning that Arne Slot could potentially rest key players for tomorrow’s fixture.
After they became the first team to confirm at least a play-off spot when they beat Girona in their last European game, mathematically Liverpool need just one point in the final two matches to ensure they finish in the top eight, meaning they would head straight into the round of 16.
Diogo Jota is again a doubt for tomorrow night, after he missed the 2-0 away win at Brentford on Saturday, and Alexis Mac Allister is also back in contention after missing the Girona match through suspension.
