Liverpool could be a potential landing spot for Leroy Sane if former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy is to be believed.

In recent months, reports have surfaced that the Reds were interested in signing the German star, especially with the 29-year-old's contract set to expire at the end of the season. However, Bayern Munich reportedly attached a $30 million price tag on the winger.

That said, Murphy believes Sane could be a marquee signing for Arne Slot and company. Speaking with Online Betting Guide (OLBG), the 47-year-old claimed the Reds would be wise to pursue the German, even if Sane's performance is inconsistent and leaves much to be desired since his time with Manchester City.

"Leroy Sane has got tremendous ability and would bring that to Liverpool," Murphy said, per OLBG. “He can play on both the left and the right and he’s an international standard of player. He's played at big clubs most of his career. That's exactly the type of player I'm talking about, exactly the type of player that Liverpool need."

Murphy also admitted that Sane's inconsistencies could be a deal breaker for some, he believes Slot can bring out the best in the winger if he finds himself at Anfield in the near future.

“Okay, he's not everybody's cup of tea because his numbers haven't been great and he can be brilliant one minute and a little bit erratic the next," Murphy continued. "But ultimately he has all the tools to succeed and he's shown his levels before. He is someone I think would be the level of player Liverpool should be looking for.”

And while Murphy notes Sane would be a worthwhile addition to the club, it remains to be seen if the German will re-sign with Bayern Munich. Additionally, there were rumblings in late December that the 29-year-old favored a move to Barcelona rather than a move back to the Premier League, per CaughtOffside.

To add intrigue, Sane also has garnered interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, though it appears the German has no plans of playing in the Saudi Pro League. Although Italian clubs have expressed interest in the winter, Sane most likely will end up in the Premier League, as Manchester United and Arsenal also are in the running.

If Sane does come to Anfield, he will be given the unenviable task of potentially replacing Mohamed Salah, according to former United coach Rene Meulensteen. Speaking with OLBG, Meulensteen expressed a belief that if the Reds sign the German, they also will be bidding farewell to the Egyptian star.

"I think Leroy Sane is a good suggestion to replace Mohamed Salah, but the hardest thing is replacing big names like that," he said. "I remember when Roy Keane left Manchester United, it was said that we needed to get another Roy Keane and you can’t – there is only one Roy Keane.

"It’s the same with Salah, he is unique and there may be players a bit like him, like Jarrod Bowen at West Ham, but it won’t be the same level. I think Liverpool should go for someone completely different to stop the comparison.”
