Liverpool vs Brentford LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Liverpool vs Brentford – LIVE!

Arne Slot enjoyed a successful afternoon in his first Premier League match at Anfield as Liverpool earned a deserved 2-0 win over Brentford. The hosts were dominant from the start, even if there was a slower pace to their play than often seen under Jurgen Klopp, but there was a familiar feel to the opening goal.

As was seen many times under Klopp, Liverpool were ruthless on the counter, breaking from a Brentford corner as Diogo Jota played in Luis Diaz and the Colombian provided the finish. Chances to double the lead came and went after the break, with Nathan Collins twice denying Jota with some superb defending and Mark Flekken keeping out Diaz’s strike, but the second goal felt almost inevitable.

It came with 20 minutes remaining, as Diaz slid the ball into Salah’s pass and he curled a trademark finish into the far corner, putting the result beyond doubt. There could well have been more goals, Alexis Mac Allister’s flicked header hitting the bar and Cody Gakpo doing likewise with a powerful deflected strike from distance, but the three points were comfortably secured.

Salah has not been as impactful as against Ipswich last weekend but has a tendency to drift in and out of games anyway.

Well, he's drifted back into this one to good effect, doubling the lead.

Liverpool 2-0 Brentford

18:02 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Slot immediately turns to his bench.

Diaz and Jota make way, with Gakpo and Nunez introduced. Alexander-Arnold replaced too, as Bradley comes on.

Curls a left-footed finish into the far corner.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:59 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Mbeumo down in the box, he’s offside though. Would have been an interesting one.

There have been a couple of Brentford changes. Mikkel Damsgaard and Fabio Carvalho, against his former club, on for Keane Lewis-Potter and Mathias Jensen.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:56 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Collins has been absolutely incredible.

Diaz with lovely footwork, slides in Jota and it’s another chance... until Collins slides in to make a brilliant block.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:54 , Matt Verri

64 mins: It’s a miracle this is only 1-0.

Constant pressure now, ball rolls into the path of Diaz and he has space ten yards out... Flekken down brilliantly to tip the shot away.

Dom Smith at Anfield

17:52 , Matt Verri

Lots of noise around Anfield in the last five minutes or so, and it's because Liverpool have upped the ante somewhat, and the home supporters sense the second goal is coming.

They've sped up their play, and Brentford are now hanging on by a thread, with Flekken saving Konate's header just now.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:51 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Nearly a stunning goal. Jota, Mac Allister and Salah involved, before it’s poked behind for a corner. Liverpool rampant at the moment.

Alexander-Arnold with the ball in, again fired towards the near post. And it’s off the woodwork as Mac Allister comes in!

Comes back into the middle, Konate heads at Flekken.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:49 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Huge chance for Liverpool!

Mac Allister clips a ball over the top to Alexander-Arnold, he rolls it across the face of goal into the path of Jota.

Looks certain to score, but it’s a stunning bit of defending from Collins to slide in and deflect it over.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:45 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Not been hugely convincing since half-time from Liverpool. They concede another corner.

Jensen swings it to the back post, Collins gets up superbly but Alisson makes a big, big save.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:42 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Lewis-Potter cuts inside, Brentford have plenty of numbers forward in this attack.

Mbeumo allowed to work it onto his left foot on the edge of the area, shot is deflected just wide. Alisson had no idea where that was going.

Brentford corner, taken short and comes to nothing. By nothing I do mean Roerslev volleying over from about 40 yards out. Optimistic would be a generous description.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:38 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Great save!

Jota with one touch to bring the cross down, a second to send an overhead kick towards the far corner.

Robertson gets on the end of it, Flekken scrambles across to save his header. Looks like the Brentford man did so with his face.

Corner is deep, too deep and Wissa flicks it away.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:36 , Matt Verri

46 mins: Collins down after about 15 seconds.

He got an elbow to the face from Jota, as they challenged in the air. Just a free-kick, Jota escapes further punishment.

Back underway!

17:34 , Matt Verri

Second-half is up and running at Anfield.

How Diaz opened the scoring

17:29 , Matt Verri

Brilliant counter from Liverpool, taking full advantage of Brentford leaving so much space at the back.

Jurgen Klopp would be proud...

Dom Smith at Anfield

17:21 , Matt Verri

A hugely frustrating first half for Brentford and in particular for Jensen and Norgaard, both booked and both struggling against Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai in midfield.

Just the one goal, courtesy of Diaz on the break, but Liverpool and Arne Slot will be confident they can add to it after the break.

HT: Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:19 , Matt Verri

Liverpool in control at half-time, even if the lead is only one goal.

Luis Diaz’s early strike the difference at the break, Liverpool much the better side. Brentford have had a couple of decent moments, but nothing in the way of big chances.

17:16 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Jensen now into the book, he catches Mac Allister late.

Two minutes added on.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:14 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Lewis-Potter beats Alexander-Arnold, finds space for the shot but it’s comfortable enough for Alisson.

Visitors have been better in the last ten minutes or so, not quite as dominant from the hosts.

Dom Smith at Anfield

17:13 , Matt Verri

Alexander-Arnold couldn't have come closer there, but the block was a superb one and took the ball sailing just over the bar.

Into the last five minutes of the first half. Incredibly, it's still only 1-0.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:12 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Alexander-Arnold chops onto his left foot, deflected strike flies just over the bar. Corner.

Robertson with the in-swinger, can’t beat Norgaard at the near post. Mbeumo briefly interested on the counter, but Gravenberch covers well.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:09 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Ugly challenge from Gravenberch, Brentford players not happy with that.

Jensen gets clattered, as the Dutch midfielder goes in late and initially with both feet. Gets away with just a yellow card.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:06 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Brentford are getting plenty of chances to put the ball in the Liverpool box. Corner coming up, after good defending from Konate.

Again it nearly turns into a chance at the other end of the pitch, but the pass can’t quite set Diaz free again.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

17:02 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Szoboszlai into the book, trips the Brentford man as he tries to drive into space.

Salah then thinks he’s away for the hosts, but he gave Lewis-Potter a shove in the back and the whistle goes. It’s gone very scrappy all of a sudden.

Mbeumo with the ball in, Norgaard gets a slight touch and the ball bobbles just wide.

Dom Smith at Anfield

17:00 , Matt Verri

Not Alexander-Arnold's best free-kick by any stretch, but another shot for Liverpool, who remain utterly dominant.

Brentford just can't keep hold of the ball at the moment. The hosts are pushing for a second.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

16:59 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Over the wall, over the bar.

Alexander-Arnold tried to just clip it into the top corner, but it’s high and wide.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

16:58 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Diaz cutting inside, desperate to work the space for a shot on his right foot.

Past a couple of challenges, before Norgaard bundles him over. It’s a perfect position for Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

16:55 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Alexander-Arnold goes down on the edge of the box, appeals waved away.

Ball played back to Flekken, who doesn’t really want it as Jota comes sliding in. Goalkeeper just about clears the danger in time.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

16:52 , Matt Verri

20 mins: This one right on top of Flekken, punched away.

Fairly subdued atmosphere - Liverpool fans feeling very comfortable at the moment.

That gets the noise up again, lovely move and the ball comes to Salah in the box. Shanks his shot well wide.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

16:50 , Matt Verri

19 mins: It’s all Liverpool.

Diaz slides a ball through to Robertson, he tries to sneak a finish in at the near post, turned behind for a corner.

Alexander-Arnold swings it in, almost as though he’s trying to score at the near post. Another corner coming up.

Dom Smith at Anfield

16:46 , Matt Verri

Oh what a fortunate deflection can do for you. Lucky bounce for Liverpool and suddenly they're away, two v two, from Brentford's corner. Bam.

Just like that it's 1-0 and suddenly an almighty challenge for the Bees now.

Liverpool 1-0 Brentford

16:46 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Alexander-Arnold pings a ball over the top and Liverpool have space again on the break. Brentford so, so open.

Salah it is threatening to get in behind, he’s just about slowed down.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Brentford | Luis Diaz 13'

16:44 , Matt Verri

Brentford’s turn to see if they can threaten from a corner.

Into the six-yard box, Wissa can’t make contact and now Liverpool are flying forward on the count.

It’s Jota, through to Diaz... brilliant finish! That was ruthless.

Dom Smith at Anfield

16:42 , Matt Verri

Slow, methodical start to the match by Liverpool, this. Mac Allister seeing a lot of the ball in the middle of the park but struggling to pass through Brentford, who are set up very compactly.

The Bees look a threat on the break, though, with Wissa and Mbeumo hoping to prove as dangerous as they did in last weekend's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

16:41 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Salah loses the ball... Salah wins it back. All fairly controlled from Liverpool so far, nothing much to trouble Brentford yet. Not much pace.

Corner for the hosts swung towards Jota, Wissa heads it away to safety and now he can lead the break.

Liverpool get plenty of shirts back quickly though, chance goes.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

16:38 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Wissa too quick for Szoboszlai, he’s away down the left wing.

Fires a low ball across the face of goal, Mbeumo can’t get there and Robertson lets the ball run away to safety.

Liverpool 0-0 Brentford

16:34 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Robertson with the ball in behind, Jota briefly interested but Pinnock does well to get across and cover.

Unsurprisingly, it’s Liverpool straight on the front foot from kick-off.

KICK-OFF!

16:31 , Matt Verri

A typically rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

We’re up and running!

Here we go!

16:27 , Matt Verri

Teams are in the tunnel at Anfield.

We’re used to seeing Liverpool make fast starts on home soil under Jurgen Klopp, flying out of the blocks and using the crowd to pile the pressure on the opposition.

Will it be more of the same under Arne Slot? Players are out.

Insider information for Brentford

16:21 , Matt Verri

Thomas Frank has been speaking ahead of kick-off.

Brentford boss confirms Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg have been providing information on Liverpool’s tactics, having spent pre-season under Arne Slot.

We’ll find out how useful their input has been very shortly...

Dom Smith at Anfield

16:11 , Matt Verri

Some amazing finishing from the likes of Salah and Szoboszlai is going on in front of my eyes as Liverpool warm up here at Anfield.

Doesn't bode well for Brentford, beaten 3-0 here last season and surely needing a miracle to leave the Reds' fortress with a result this afternoon.

Bournemouth have picked up a point against Newcastle, that match finishing 1-1. The Cherries thought they had snatched a late winner, but a late goal was ruled out.

At Molineux, Chelsea have absolutely blown Wolves away. It’s a 6-2 win for their first Premier League victory under Enzo Maresca.

Toney future still up in the air

15:50 , Matt Verri

No Ivan Toney for Brentford this afternoon, as Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli continue to push to sign him.

Frank declined to provide an update on negotiations earlier this week, and was coy on Toney’s future at the club.

When asked if the 28-year-old would be in action at Anfield, Frank replied: "Who knows? Let's see on Sunday what will happen.

"Ivan trained the whole week. Trained with good attitude in every aspect. He could be involved, he could not be involved.

"He could be here after the 30th and he could not be here. Basically everything is up in the air. I've said the whole time that if he's here I'm very happy, if he's not here then I'm happy on his behalf.

Liverpool look to make it two from two...

15:43 , Matt Verri

It wasn’t entirely comfortable, but Liverpool made a successful start to the Premier League season.

They travelled to Ipswich on the opening weekend and got the job done, thanks to goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

The Reds will be looking for three more points here to ensure they make the trip to Old Trafford next weekend with confidence still high.

In the building!

Reds have arrived at Anfield.

I have some good news for those of you who enjoy watching footballers walk towards a dressing room...

Slot tweaks Liverpool side

15:26

Just the one change from Arne Slot.

Jarell Quansah drops to the bench, as Ibrahima Konate comes in to partner Virgil van Dijk at the bench.

It’s otherwise as expected - Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo having to settle for places on the bench.

As for Brentford, the big news is that Ivan Toney is not involved. Keane Lewis-Potter does start for the visitors.

Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho on the bench against their former club.

Pre-match thoughts from Thomas Frank

15:06 , Matt Verri

The Brentford boss is, unsurprisingly, expecting an incredibly tough test for his side this afternoon.

Arne Slot's first Premier League programme notes

14:53 , Matt Verri

"I know from past experience as a football fan, as a player and a coach that this will be a special day for many people," Slot says.

"It is a moment that all of us look forward to because it brings so many possibilities and opportunities and one of the best things about today is that we get to share this excitement together.

"I do not want to dwell too much on the fact that this will be my first competitive fixture at Anfield in my new role as head coach.

“It goes without saying that this is a big honour for me and also for my staff, but at the same time our only focus will be on the game itself, not on any personal feelings or side issues.

"Having said that, it is important that I say thank you to everyone who has made my staff and myself so welcome from the moment we came here.

“Before I arrived, I was told that Liverpool is a family club, and it has definitely lived up to this description in so many ways. This is something that we are very grateful for.”

Standard Sport prediction

14:46 , Matt Verri

Liverpool were slow to get into their stride against Ipswich, but once they started to click they were out of sight. Brentford were also slow starters against Crystal Palace and found it harder to move up the gears.

The Reds in their first home game of the season should see this one out fairly comfortably.

Liverpool to win, 2-0.

Brentford team news

14:36 , Matt Verri

For Brentford, it remains to be seen whether Ivan Toney is involved, amid ongoing speculation of a potential move to Saudi Arabia.

Otherwise, it's a case of as you were with Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry not back until next month and both Joshua Dasilva and Igor Thiago longer-term absentees.

Liverpool team news

14:24 , Matt Verri

Arne Slot could make at least one change to his Liverpool team when they host Brentford.

Young defender Jarell Quansah started the win over Ipswich last weekend and did not appear to do much wrong, but was withdrawn at half-time by his new boss and replaced with Ibrahima Konate.

Slot explained after the game that the decision was tactical, having seen Konate impress as Liverpool went on to win the game.

The manager then revealed on Friday that Quansah picked up a “bit of an injury” during the week, further throwing his involvement into doubt, and hopes to train with the squad later in the day.

The Reds boss said: “On Tuesday he picked up a bit of a injury so let's see if he can train today.”

Further forward, it should be a case of as you were with the front six. Cody Gakpo will be pushing Luis Diaz for a start after a late cameo against the Tractor Boys, while Darwin Nunez failed to get off the bench but should get his first minutes of the season on Sunday.
