Liverpool were back to their swashbuckling best on Wednesday night as they overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat AC Milan 3-2 in their Champions League opener. Their fans will expect the same ferocity in attack and a full quote of points as they host Crystal Palace today.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are a formidable force when in full flight. Those three goals against the Italians were supplemented by a 3-0 win away to Leeds last weekend proving that the 2019/20 champions are finding their groove.

Palace have rediscovered their mojo. After firing blanks in their first two Premier League games, they hit two in an away draw with West Ham and struck three in a famous win at home to Tottenham. What will please new manager Patrick Vieira is the clean sheet his defence kept in that win at Selhurst Park.

This is a much stiffer challenge however. Even a point would constitute a significant achievement for the Eagles.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace is scheduled for a 3pm BST kick-off at Anfield in Liverpool today.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace team news

Harvey Elliott continues to recover from the horrific injury he suffered in the win over Leeds and Roberto Firmino has yet to fully recover from a hamstring niggle. Belgian striker Divock Origi made his first start for the club in ten months against AC Milan but was substituted on the hour mark after he was left on the ground clutching his leg.

Apart from that Klopp has a full strength team to call upon. Sadio Mane will likely start which would see Diogo Jota move to a central striker role. Thiago Alcantara might also replace the more defensive minded Naby Keïta who started on Wednesday.

After scoring two goals on debut against Tottenham, Odsonne Edouard has surely earned a starting berth for the visit of Anfield. That would likely see Christian Benteke benched though the striker did little wrong before making way for the new recruit from Celtic.

Jordan Ayew place is also far from a guarantee. The winger has started four of Vieira’s five games in charge but is yet to score or assist. On Saturday he played 87 minutes before being replaced by Olise, who in his short cameo helped create an opening for one of Edouard’s strikes.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace prediction

Palace will be buoyed from their demolition of a better resourced club last week, but there is no doubt that this is an entirely different prospect away to one of the continent’s best teams.

Liverpool’s defensive partnership of Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk continues to calcify and will be a stern test for whichever striker Vieira plays.

Anything other than a home win would represent a shock result but don’t bank on it.

Liverpool 3 - 1 Crystal Palace
