Liverpool faced a thick Merseyside fog in its 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Thursday, clouding not just players on the pitch but hampering the broadcast experience from viewers around the world. Many took to social media to poke fun at just how challenging the spectating experience was.

Fog dominated the Premier League Boxing Day clashes - Wolves' 2-0 win over Manchester United was also played out among a smattering of clouds.

There was enough growing chatter before Liverpool-Leicester that the "Liverpool FC Help" X account had to post a statement clarifying the match would take place. "If you are coming to the match today, please ensure you set off earlier than usual due to foggy conditions in and around Anfield stadium," it read.." Please take care when traveling."

The Reds already had a fixture canceled due to inclement weather conditions: the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park, scheduled for early December, was postponed.

A postponement to Thursday's match against Leicester would have left Arne Slot's side facing even greater fixture congestion. With the Reds competing on all four fronts this year, the Dutch manager couldn't afford to reschedule this game.

Many fans poked light at the conditions. "Possession: Liverpool 72%, Leicester 28%, Fog 100%," posted one fan on Blueskye. "“This fog reminds me of the start of a Serie A game when all the flares have been set off," another wrote on X.

Some seemed to legitimately be aggrieved. "This fog is ridiculous. This is actually not viewable from a TV perspective," one wrote.

“it's impossible to tell what is happening in either penalty area due to the fog, only in midfield can I identify what's going on," Michael Caley, host of the popular 'Double Pivot Podcast,' posted on Blueskye. it's like this game is the opposite of statistical analysis of football”

John Muller, a senior football writer at The Athletic, teased a post about statistical analysis. " “Wow look at this tactical setup from Liverpool," he wrote along with a picture of what appeared to be a literal cloud on the Anfield pitch

Liverpool Transfer Room, an account with over 350k+ followers on X, posted "We've found the culprit responsible for the dense fog around Anfield today," corresponding with an AI-generated picture of Mikel Arteta holding a fog machine.

The win sees Liverpool climb seven points clear of second-place Chelsea (with a game in hand) atop the Premier League table. The Reds take on West Ham this Sunday when Slot's side resumes its title charge.
