Liverpool vs Tottenham LIVE!

Liverpool finally found some form in a 4-2 Premier League victory over Tottenham on Sunday in much-loved manager Jurgen Klopp's penultimate game at Anfield.

Strikes from Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott pushed Klopp's men within five points of leaders Arsenal in the table with two games remaining, and four points behind holders Manchester City, who have a game in hand over both.

Liverpool talisman Salah headed home his 18th league goal of the season in the 16th minute before Robertson doubled their lead with a tap-in just before halftime. Gakpo headed in Elliott's cross in the 50th, then the midfielder bagged his own with a rocket from 20 yards out that curled into the top corner.

Richarlison and Son Heung-min pulled two back to make for a lively ending, but a comeback was not on the cards for Ange Postecoglou's Spurs who sit fifth in the table.

Tottenham player ratings

18:32 , Marc Mayo

Emerson Royal 3

At fault for Liverpool’s first and third goals. Was out of position and up against the menacing Salah, but lax defensively and offers nothing as an inverted full-back.

Heung-min Son 5

Scored to give Spurs some late hope but largely ineffective as the centre-forward again. Struggled to hold up the ball. More comfortable finishing the game back on the left.

Richarlison (Bentancur 61’) 8

Offered Spurs a focal point in attack and got a goal and an assist in an encouraging cameo. Should have started the game.

Liverpool survive a late Tottenham fightback to complete a convincing win!

Darwin Nunez almost makes it five at the death but Guglielmo Vicario is out well to save.

Goal disallowed!

18:23 , Marc Mayo

Darwin Nunez is played into space and Cody Gakpo is completely free in the box... but a moment’s hestiation from the Uruguayan allows a Spurs block to divert his pass.

But moments later Liverpool are through again and he does make the pass... Mohamed Salah scores and the flag is up.

Nunez went too early.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham | 90+1 mins

18:20 , Marc Mayo

Vital touch by Trent Alexander-Arnold halts Richarlison’s dart into the box from a lob over the top.

Spurs look a lot better with a proper striker like the Brazilian to spearhead their frontline.

Alexander-Arnold booked for delaying the restart.

Richarlison’s shot is saved by Alisson and pops up for Brennan Johnson at the far post... Joe Gomez’s intervention turns the ball away!

It was a high boot and VAR will check, but doesn’t look enough to give a penalty.

Johnson clattered the post but looks fine.

Check complete, play on.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham | 87 mins

18:14 , Marc Mayo

Wide from Dominik Szoboszlai after a swift pass into the box by Mohamed Salah. Tough to direct that one home at the near post.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham | 85 mins

18:12 , Marc Mayo

Great work by Jarell Quansah to face up to Richarlison in the box, win the ball and clear.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

Comeback on? Liverpool have switched off, just like they did at 3-0 in this fixture last season. It's probably too late but Spurs have some hope with a few minutes plus stoppages to play.

Daring stuff from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who catches the keeper off his line from the halfway line and lands a shot just over the crossbar...

Harvey Elliott replaced by Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham | 81 mins

18:09 , Marc Mayo

Bizarre miss by Mohamed Salah as Micky van de Ven and Oliver Skipp allow a tame bouncing ball to beat them in the six-yard box before the Egyptian flails his foot at a shot... and it goes wide!

Pape Sarr replaced by Spurs for Giovani Lo Celso.

GOAL! Liverpool 4-1 Tottenham | Richarlison, 73'

18:02 , Marc Mayo

Ange Postecoglou may approve of Tottenham’s desire to push forward with a decent level of energy given the scoreline, in fact they appear to be more confident of doing so now they’re four goals down.

And now it’s three... Richarlison rolls home a cross for 4-1!

Watch Harvey Elliott's stunning goal

The pick of the bunch.

Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham | 66 mins

17:54 , Marc Mayo

A third shot by James Maddison, who is at least looking to get on with it off the bench, and again he aims one off-target.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

This has turned into an ugly afternoon for Ange Postecoglou, whose side are heading for a humiliation.

Whatever the quality of Spurs squad, and they have resembled a rabble this afternoon, it is increasingly difficult to rationalise some of the manager's decisions.

Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham | 65 mins

17:52 , Marc Mayo

Time for some Liverpool changes. Stefan Bajcetic’s long, long road back to Premier League football is complete as the youngster replaces Wataru Endo.

Joe Gomez also on for Andrew Robertson.

Yves Bissouma booked for an angry response to a foul on Harvey Elliott.

Oliver Skipp, Richarlison (who gets a good Liverpool booing) and James Maddison on for Tottenham. Off go Dejan Kulusevski, Emerson Royal and Rodrigo Bentancur.

GGOOOAAALLL!!!! Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham | Elliott, 60'

WHAT A GOAL HARVEY ELLIOTT!

He cuts inside onto his left foot and picks the top corner out with aplomb from 25 yards!

Liverpool 3-0 Tottenham | 58 mins

17:45 , Marc Mayo

Emerson Royal becomes the third Tottenham player to be booked for dragging Mohamed Salah back.

He’s had a dreadful day at left-back. You fancy Micky van de Ven would have fared better, with Radu Dragusin available for the central role.

Watch Cody Gakpo make it three

17:43 , Marc Mayo

The Liverpool man is enjoying a fine end to his season.

Liverpool 3-0 Tottenham | 55 mins

Half a chance for Brennan Johnson from a decent cross, he heads it fairly close to Alisson who holds on.

Liverpool 3-0 Tottenham | 53 mins

17:41 , Marc Mayo

This half is turning into everything Ange Postecoglou would have feared.

Spurs have done nothing to change the course of this game since the break.

Luis Diaz feeds Trent Alexander-Arnold’s diagonal run into the box but a vital tackle nicks the ball away.

GGGGGOOOOAAALLL!!! Liverpool 3-0 Tottenham | Gakpo, 50'

17:38 , Marc Mayo

CODY GAKPO FOR THREE!

A lovely cross by Harvey Elliott and the Dutch forward buries his header.

Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham | 47 mins

17:35 , Marc Mayo

Superb tackle from Jarell Quansah after Yves Bissouma had robbed Wataru Endo!

Heung-min Son dallied on Bissouma’s pass despite having Brennan Johnson completely free behind him.

After the play ends, Micky van de Ven is booked. Not sure what for.

Liverpool vs Tottenham | Kick-off!

Back out for the second half and no changes have been made by either team.

Liverpool on course for another win

17:27 , Marc Mayo

At times this has felt like a typical, quiet end-of-season affair but Liverpool have turned on the style multiple times at a moment’s notice.

Mohamed Salah left his marker for dead to power home a header 15 minutes in and Andrew Robertson’s tap-in on the rebound, shortly before the break, was richly deserved.

Perhaps they will twist the knife with some party football in the second half?

Watch Liverpool go two up via Andrew Robertson

17:23 , Marc Mayo

No less than what they deserve.

Not much to cling onto for Spurs

17:20 , Marc Mayo

One shot is all Tottenham mustered in that half with some neat build-up play hampered by a complete lack of presence in the Liverpool box.

Defensively they’ve been shaky and on the ball they’ve been too easily pressured by the hosts’ press.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

Liverpool well on top and deservedly leading against a toothless and open Spurs.

If the Reds turn the screw in the second half, this could get ugly for Postecoglou and his players, but Spurs did come back from 3-0 down here last season (only to lose 4-3)!

Half-time!

17:18 , Marc Mayo

Two added minutes pass by without incident and Liverpool are very good value for this two-goal lead at the break.

GGGGOOOOAAALLL!!! Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham | Robertson, 45'

17:17 , Marc Mayo

A TAP-IN FOR ANDREW ROBERTSON!

Spurs vacant as Liverpool come forward and a low shot is spilled for the Scot, who smartly follows in to score.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 45 mins

17:15 , Marc Mayo

Pape Sarr booked for slowing the play down at a Liverpool free-kick. Tottenham are, of course, the team losing.

Can’t blame him mind, the hosts are attacking with great pace and tenacity. Harvey Elliott is next to shoot at goal, saved.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 43 mins

17:13 , Marc Mayo

An awful pass out from the back by Cristian Romero allows Liverpool to nick possession, which leads to Trent Alexander-Arnold cutting onto his weaker foot and shooting over.

That’s very much a let-off.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 41 mins

17:11 , Marc Mayo

The Spurs defence/midfield is incredibly compact when Liverpool sit outside the box, which is not a hugely ideal concept against one of the continent’s best teams at creating from wide areas.

Trent Alexander-Arnold hammers a shot into the crowd before Luis Diaz’s acrobatic rebound flies wide.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

Liverpool looking much the likelier to score the all-important second goal in this match.

Spurs are getting into some decent positions in the final third but struggling to offer any threat on goal. They've had one shot so far (an Yves Bissouma flier, miles wide).

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 38 mins

17:08 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool look by far the more likely team to score the next goal here.

Alexis Mac Allister ghosts in down the right wing and his cutback is mopped up nicely by Pape Sarr.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 35 mins

17:06 , Marc Mayo

Trent Alexander-Arnold has had Brennan Johnson’s number for much of the first half, and calmly guides him into touch to earn an ovation from the Kop.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

Liverpool are well on top now but haven't got the memo about Spurs' vulnerability from corners. They've already had three but only put one on goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, with one played short and one deep to the edge of the box.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 34 mins

17:05 , Marc Mayo

Sloppy stuff from Spurs and Liverpool hassle them into winning the ball back by their box.

Cody Gakpo provides some lovely link-up play and goes down... no penalty says Paul Tierney! Replays suggest the ball was well gone.

Tottenham’s counter is shut down and Liverpool race right back at them, before Mohamed Salah is directed into touch.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 31 mins

17:02 , Marc Mayo

Maybe it’s the spring sun or Tottenham’s shonky play but there is a real end-of-season feel about this game.

A pleasant afternoon out so far for the home fans, of little ultimate consequence beyond its own isolated joy.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 26 mins

16:57 , Marc Mayo

Spurs are trying to take the sting out with a spell on the ball, but there’s not much threat for Liverpool to worry about.

The hosts are happy to get on with it a bit more when they get the ball.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 22 mins

16:53 , Marc Mayo

More nervy moments for Tottenham after the ball fortuitously breaks for Luis Diaz.

Guglielmo Vicario smothers the Colombian well before Pedro Porro hoofs the ball into the away end to end a scramble.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 21 mins

16:51 , Marc Mayo

Not much sign of a response from Tottenham yet, Liverpool’s confidence on the up after the goal.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

Mohamed Salah is full of menace this afternoon but it was abject defending from Spurs to allow the Egyptian to ghost in unmarked at the far post to head home. Ange Postecoglou's side look wide open again at the back and short of ideas in the final third, suggesting this could be a long afternoon.

Watch Mohamed Salah goal put Liverpool in front

16:51 , Marc Mayo

An early lead for the Reds.

Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham | 19 mins

16:50 , Marc Mayo

Guglielmo Vicario has had more questions asked of him lately, for his aerial command specifically.

And he makes a right meal of that header. The Italian falls way too early and throws a weak palm to deflect the ball over his line at about head height.

Tough break for Spurs but their weaknesses were well exposed, with Emerson Royal completely losing Mohamed Salah’s run.

A floated cross to the far post sees him escape his marker and power a header home!

Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham | 16 mins

16:46 , Marc Mayo

Dangerous cross from Brennan Johnson after some good work through the Tottenham midfield to send him through.

No No10 for Spurs but their midfield three are looking slick and positive on the ball, Ange Postecoglou will love that.

Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham | 14 mins

16:45 , Marc Mayo

Offside flag goes up as Mohamed Salah pops up at the far post to latch onto a flick-on.

He’s well offside too, as he hits the post.

Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham | 12 mins

16:43 , Marc Mayo

Tricky spell defensively for Spurs, but Pape Sarr does well to keep the ball and win a foul in midfield.

It feels like one of those games where whoever doesn’t have possession will be the bigger threat, such are their abilities on the counter-attack.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

A lively start here, with the likely pattern of the game already set. Spurs kept the ball for the first six minutes without threatening before two lethal transitions from Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah is already looking dangerous and up against Spurs' defensive weak link in Emerson Royal.

16:32 , Marc Mayo

Heung-min Son the central attacker in a 4-3-3 with a pretty flat midfield three patrolling the engine room.

Dan Kilpatrick at Anfield:

This is the fourth different midfield combination Ange Postecoglou has used in as many games. Chopping and changing like that is rarely a positive sign, although perhaps the Tottenham manager is working out who he can trust before a big summer clearout - which he hinted at on Friday.

Aston Villa's defeat at Brighton has opened up fourth place if Spurs can get something here, although this still feels a little like a dead rubber, with both clubs likely to finish the campaign in their current position.

Nonetheless, it is significant for the managers, as Jurgen Klopp savours his penultimate game at Anfield and Postecoglou looks to ease the pressure after a miserable run of results.

Ange Postecoglou sets out Spurs' gameplan

16:21 , Marc Mayo

The Tottenham boss has explained the thinking behind packing him midfield today.

“This is the most challenging part of the season for us, you’ve got to be up for it,” he tells Sky Sports.

“The players understand and embrace it, it’s not easy what we’re trying to do but you have to be up for it.

“What a great opportunity for us to try and play some football.

“We’re just going to need some legs today, it’s a short turnaround and there’ll be some intensity early on. The three we have in [the midfield] will be able to do that.”

Liverpool vs Tottenham | Countdown to kick-off

16:17 , Marc Mayo

We are now within sight of kick-off with under 15 minutes to wait.

Spurs haven’t won at this ground since May 2011 when Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart provided the goals.

Let’s hear from Dan in the press box:

Full-time at the Amex

16:15 , Marc Mayo

The full-time whistle goes on the south coast and Brighton have beaten Aston Villa.

That’s a nice little pre-game boost for Spurs, who sit seven points off fourth-placed Villa with two games in hand. It also guarantees Liverpool will finish at least third.

The Reds can go within four points of Man City by winning today, having then played a game more.

Jurgen Klopp gives his pre-game thoughts

16:13 , Marc Mayo

Jurgen Klopp has insisted there was no doubt that Mohamed Salah would start today.

The pair clashed on the touchline at West Ham a week ago but he returns to the XI.

He tells Sky Sports: “You cannot just play against Tottenham, they’ll go through you and cause massive problems.

“[Mohamed Salah] had a good training week, that’s what we all want. There was no doubt he’d start today. That’s it.”

Why James Maddison doesn't start for Spurs

16:01 , Marc Mayo

Hearing reports that James Maddison picked up a knock in Spurs’ defeat at Chelsea in midweek, which is why he is on the bench again today.

Around the grounds

15:58 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea have romped to a 5-0 win over West Ham, which puts them seventh and into the European qualification places for the first time in a long time.

Brighton have struck late to down Aston Villa via a Joao Pedro goal, a header having seen a penalty saved. Into nine minutes of injury time, that would lift them to 11th and keep Villa within touching distance-ish of Spurs in the hunt for fourth.

Rewind: VAR fumble chalks off legal Liverpool goal

15:51 , Marc Mayo

Just imagine if Liverpool were on course to finish a point off the title...

Earlier this season, Luis Diaz saw a legal goal chalked off for offside after the linesman’s flag went up.

VAR declared “check complete” having failed to notice it was initially ruled out and, well, the rest is history as they say.

Re-live how it all broke down behind-the-scenes:

Tottenham make one change

15:40 , Marc Mayo

Ange Postecoglou has bolstered his midfield with a move to a pure 4-3-3 formation.

Virgil van Dijk starts for Liverpool

15:35 , Marc Mayo

The hosts have their captain fit to start after an injury worry.

Virgil van Dijk keeps his place along with Harvey Elliott, who moves to midfield to allow Mohamed Salah to return. Ryan Gravenberch drops out as a result.

Liverpool trio join the squad

15:18 , Marc Mayo

It appears that Liverpool could well have Virgil van Dijk in their line-up today.

He has appeared with the squad along with Conor Bradley and Stefan Bajcetic, the Northern Irish defender having missed last week’s draw at West Ham.

Of course, as club captain it is plausible that an injured Van Dijk sticks with the squad anyway to help oversee preparations.

Will Virgil van Dijk play for Liverpool today?

15:12 , Marc Mayo

The team buses are just pulling up at Anfield and Virgil van Dijk, a doubt today due to injury, was spotted on the Reds’ pre-game walkabout earlier on.

The Dutch defender missed training for much of the week leading up to this game.

In his pre-game programme notes, the Liverpool captain has written about how the team must approach the end to the season.

“The incentives are there for all of us to see so let's go for it,” he writes. There will be a time to take stock when we can make our own minds up about the season we have had, but that time is not now. The only focus at this point should be collecting as many points as we can from the last nine that are available to us.

“For this to happen we know there will need to be some improvement. We have been inconsistent in recent weeks and that has cost us. So putting this right is definitely an important objective.

“I don't think we have played particularly badly – in some games we have actually played well but haven't made the most of our superiority – but at the same time we haven't got the results that we have been looking for and this needs to change.

“The good thing is we have shown regularly throughout this season that we are more than capable of achieving the kind of consistency that we are striving for. We know what it takes and we know what is required, so it is a question of returning to the kind of standards we have set for ourselves before.

“We don't need to listen to outside noise or dream it all up again. It's just about rediscovering something that we have already shown that we can do.”

Ange Postecoglou confident Spurs back him to make 'drastic change'

15:07 , Marc Mayo

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou believes he has the club's full support to implement the "drastic change" needed to the playing squad and staff to turn his side into a top team.

In a defiant press briefing sandwiched between Thursday night's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea and the visit to Liverpool on Sunday, Postecoglou said the club had "brought into my vision" but suggested that the squad could eventually be "unrecognisable" from the one he inherited.

“I’m sitting here with the Feyenoord emblem on my chest, so in principle the intention is that it’s all about Feyenoord.

“I have said before that I am confident that it will be done. I don’t know when that will be. But I expect an agreement will be reached.”

Mohamed Salah issue settled, says Jurgen Klopp

14:48 , Marc Mayo

Jurgen Klopp insists his spat with Mohamed Salah is “completely resolved”.

“Completely resolved, it’s not a problem,” said Klopp. “If we wouldn’t know each other for that long, I am not sure how we would deal with it. But we know each other for that long and respect each other too much. That’s really no problem.

“I think we have the right to deal with these kind of things, completely independent of any expectations from the outside. So we are absolutely fine with it, that’s a non-story.

“But in general, the best situation would be everybody is in a best possible place, we win the game, we score loads of goals and yes, then the situation would probably have not been like that because Mo wouldn’t have been on the bench in the first place.”

Ange Postecoglou makes demand of Tottenham players

14:15 , Marc Mayo

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou says his struggling side's "need to go through" tough spells to develop, as they prepare for another big game at Liverpool.

Spurs have lost to their two biggest rivals this week after Sunday's 3-2 home defeat to Arsenal was followed by Thursday night’s 2-0 reverse at Chelsea, sealed by headed goals by Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson either side of the interval.

Fifth-place Spurs still trail Aston Villa by seven points with a game in hand but their hopes of a top-four finish are fading ahead of the trip to Anfield.

"I'm sure [the players are] hurt but it's also part of the process," Postecoglou said on Friday morning.

"Every job I've taken has had tough bits sometimes at the start, sometimes in the middle, sometimes at the end.”

Predicted Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Royal; Bissouma, Bentancur, Maddison; Kulusevski, Son, Richarlison

Injuries: Werner, Davies, Udogie, Sessegnon, Forster, Solomon

Early Tottenham team news: James Maddison could return

13:53 , Marc Mayo

Spurs will be without Timo Werner, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies for the rest of the season - as well as Fraser Forster, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon.

James Maddison was dropped for the defeat at Chelsea on Thursday and could come back into the starting line-up.

How we expect Liverpool to line up

Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Konate, Robertson; Endo, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz

Doubts: Van Dijk

Injuries: Jota, Matip, Thiago, Doak

Early Liverpool team news: Virgil van Dijk a doubt

13:40 , Marc Mayo

Virgil van Dijk is a doubt for Liverpool, after missing training this week with an unspecified injury.

It will be fascinating to see whether or not Klopp turns to Mohamed Salah following their clash on the touchline during last week’s draw with West Ham, even if the Liverpool boss has insisted the matter is now resolved.

Conor Bradley is back in contention after returning to fitness, but Diogo Jota remains out. Stefan Bajcetic should once again make the squad, while Joel Matip, Ben Doak and Thiago Alcantara are all still out injured.

“Virgil wasn’t [training] the whole week yet, probably part of parts of team training today,” Klopp revealed at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“So we have to see what we can do there.”

Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s coverage of Liverpool vs Tottenham!

Kick-off from Anfield comes at 4.30pm BST as the Reds and Spurs look to improve on what has been a pretty poor run-in for both teams so far.

Third place is likely to be Liverpool’s destination for Jurgen Klopp’s final Premier League campaign whereas Tottenham are heading towards fifth and qualification for just the Europa League, having lost their last three games.

You can follow all the build-up, team news, match action and reaction right there - and we’ll even have our reporter Dan Kilpatrick on Merseyside this afternoon to provide his expert analysis.
