Bologna is said to be waiting on any indication that Liverpool is willing to offload Federico Chiesa during the January transfer window.

Chiesa was viewed as an opportunistic signing when Liverpool spent around $12million to sign the player from Juventus last summer, but the move has simply not worked out so far.

The 27-year-old winger has made just four appearances for the Reds in all competitions, with three of those coming as a substitute, and his only start coming in a League Cup game last September.

Chiesa went three months without appearing between September and December, and he has not featured since his comeback appearance against Southampton a week before Christmas.

Arne Slot introduced Chiesa off the bench at half-time versus Southampton but was not overly impressed with the winger's display, describing it as "up and down" but acknowledging that it was the Italian's first appearance in a while.

Reports of a possible return to Italy this month have circulated in recent weeks, and Corriere dello Sport says that Bologna is interested in signing Chiesa for the second half of the season.

Bologna currently sits seventh in Serie A and has its work cut out to repeat its achievement from last season when the club qualified for the Champions League.

The Italian club is waiting to find out whether Liverpool is open to offloading Chiesa, and it would not be a surprise if the Reds were willing to do so, considering his lack of minutes.

The report also says that Bologna is interested in re-signing Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United. United only signed Zirkzee last summer but the 23-year-old has scored just four goals in 28 appearances for his new club, and his own supporters recently turned against him, cheering when he was substituted during the first half while United was trailing Newcastle last month.
