Ben Doak's difficult season could have a happy ending with a place at the European Championships. Doak had hoped to enjoy a breakthrough campaign at Liverpool but has featured just five times.

The 18-year-old's last outing came in the Europa League against Union Saint-Gilloise in December, when he was withdrawn on the hour mark. He subsequently underwent surgery on a knee injury and has been sidelined ever since.

But Doak was a surprise inclusion in Scotland's provisional squad for the Euros on Wednesday, alongside club mate and international captain Andy Robertson.

It is Doak's first senior call up after impressing with the Under-21s and he will get a chance to stake a claim ahead of the tournament. Scotland boss Steve Clarke is set to cut his 28-man squad down before the opening match with Germany on June 14.

Doak featured off the bench in Liverpool's first match of the season against Chelsea, having been handed his debut last term. Jürgen Klopp was full of praise for the teenager, enthusing: "Special boy, really confident, has something nobody else delivers really, this kind of dribbling, this kind of straight-forward bravery, all these kind of things."

He has returned to fitness in the final weeks of the season but has not made Klopp's final matchday squads. His Scotland inclusion comes amid a spate of injuries for Scotland ahead of the tournament.

Should he make the final squad, he will join a host of Liverpool teammates in Germany. Reds duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones were handed their first England call-ups earlier this week, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez.

Reds trio Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch have all been named in the Netherlands squad, with Diogo Jota and Dominik Szoboszlai also set to feature for their countries.

Liverpool.com says: Doak has had a difficult season with injuries and would likely have played more, especially when Klopp was without so many senior stars. It remains to be seen if he will make Scotland's final squad for the tournament but he could prove to be a real weapon in Germany this summer.
