The January transfer window is a notoriously difficult period in which to conduct business. There is little value in the market, and clubs are understandably reluctant to sell their best players in the middle of the season.

Considering how well Liverpool is doing under Arne Slot, it's easy to forget the amount of frustration that many fans were feeling following the closure of last summer's window. Liverpool had made just one (seemingly) significant addition to the squad, with Federico Chiesa an opportunistic buy from Juventus, with the only other player that the Reds parted with a fee for, Giorgi Mamardashvili, staying at Valencia for the season.

The Reds have not suffered as a result of their lack of investment last year, but Arne Slot — and many supporters, no doubt — wouldn't mind a few new faces in the squad.

Contrary to popular belief, the Reds have contended with a number of injuries this season, but it is fair to say that they have not been without their absolute key players for any significant period of time.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch have been ever-presents in the Premier League, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has missed just one game, and Alisson's absence was hardly felt owing to the excellent form of his deputy, Caoimhin Kelleher.

A significant injury to one of Salah, Van Dijk or Gravenberch would test Liverpool's staying power, though, and one player the Reds could look towards to hand Gravenberch competition — or even just a rest — is Martin Zubimendi.

Zubimendi rejected Liverpool last year but has apparently decided that he is now ready to quit Real Sociedad. He would be a sensible addition and should be fairly gettable considering the stature of the club he is currently at.

Liverpool has been linked with Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who has been excellent, and in truth he feels like more of a summer addition, but this is a dream squad, so let's stick him in there at the expense of Kostas Tsimikas.

Both Zubimendi and Kerkez would cost a pretty penny, so it might make sense to bring in a bit of money too; Darwin Nunez doesn't look like coming good for the Reds any time soon, and should reported interest from AC Milan become concrete interest, Liverpool should take the money and run.

Another player who is subject to interest from a European superpower is Alexander-Arnold, but he has to stay — until the end of the season at the very least — as the Reds compete for glory on four fronts.
