What Liverpool's ideal transfer deadline day could look like as rivals plot moves
Transfer deadline day is here.
The January market has been particularly active this year with Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Manchester City among the busiest clubs as they all aim to try and secure European soccer in the second half of the season.
Liverpool won’t have those problems and, sitting six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, Arne Slot’s squad doesn’t need much maintenance. There have been a few outgoings though, with Rhys Williams extending his loan at Morecambe, Calvin Ramsay heading to Kilmarnock, and Stefan Bajcetic swapping RB Salzburg for Las Palmas. In terms of permanent exits, Marcelo Pitaluga joined Fluminense and Tom Hill moved to Harrogate Town.

But what can we expect from the final day of the winter market, and is there anything for Liverpool fans to look forward to? Well, in short, probably not. But Liverpool could still have a positive deadline day without actually making any major signings.
Perhaps the most positive outcome for the Reds would be to see its main rivals not strengthen. Manchester United, Tottenham and Villa might, but they’re not going to challenge Liverpool. Nor will City, as underlined once again by Sunday’s 5-1 demolition by Arsenal that leaves Pep Guardiola's team 15 points off top spot.
It’s the Gunners who offer the only credible title challenge now for the Merseyside club, even if they remain six points off top and have played a game more. Arsenal had hoped to sign a striker in the January window and saw a bid rejected for Ollie Watkins last week.
It might sound petty, but for Liverpool, seeing Arsenal fail to land a center-forward may be the best outcome on deadline day. “My phone has been ringing,” Arteta replied cryptically when asked after Sunday’s game whether any signings could be completed, but at this stage it looks unlikely.
Elsewhere, there could be other positives for Liverpool to find, with several youngsters linked with loan exits. Jayden Danns is chief among them and reports have indicated he has been the subject of interest from several Championship clubs.
James McConnell is in a similar boat and, despite Slot’s comments last week, could still leave on loan. Kaide Gordon has also been linked with a short-term exit, and there could be other Liverpool youngsters who emerge on Monday.
Tyler Morton is the only senior player who may leave permanently. The 22-year-old midfielder has made five senior appearances for Liverpool in the cup competitions this season and has reportedly attracted interest from West Ham United.
As always, Liverpool fans wait in hope for news on Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. If there is to be an encouraging update, why not on deadline day? That really would be the best possible outcome for those of a red persuasion.
