Liverpool's true January transfer stance revealed after Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz U-turns
Liverpool is operating with an opportunistic mindset during the January transfer window, with the Reds having no intention of paying inflated fees for players during a notoriously difficult period to find value in.
It emerged last week that the Reds had identified Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as a player of interest after it became apparent that the Georgian was pushing for a move away from Napoli this month.
“He asked the club to be sold, without mincing his words," Napoli manager Antonio Conte said of Kvaratskhelia over the weekend. "This is what was said to me, the player has confirmed his decision to me.

“From my point of view, it’s a great disappointment. Today I have to take a step back. I can’t keep those who want to leave tied up in chains. I did that in the summer [when Kvaratskhelia wanted to leave] and had six months to convince all the parties to find a solution.
“I realize that the news has come out of the blue, but now I am taking a step back and it’s right that the club and Kvara’s entourage resolve the situation."

The Reds would almost certainly have needed to offload one or more players this month to make room for the highly rated 23-year-old, but as it is, it looks as though he is destined for Paris Saint-Germain after the French giant failed with its attempt to sign Kvaratskhelia last summer.
Arne Slot already has six senior attackers at his disposal in Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa, and The Athletic reports that the Dutchman is happy with the depth in his squad.
Including Harvey Elliott, Liverpool has six senior midfielders, while the squad also possesses four center-backs, two right-backs, two left-backs and two goalkeepers. With Joe Gomez the only player who is currently unavailable for selection through injury, Slot is satisfied with the options at his disposal.
However, should it become apparent that any of Liverpool's targets are available for acceptable prices during January, the Reds will not hesitate to get deals done, just as they did with Cody Gakpo in January 2023, and Luis Diaz 12 months earlier, with the club having initially planned to sign both players during the following summer's window.
