Dan Hopper made his Penrith debut in a losing cause on Saturday following his loan move from Carlisle United.

The 17-year-old Blues youth team prospect was named on the bench by Bonny Blues boss Darren Edmondson for the Northern League Division One clash with Guisborough Town.

Hopper, a day after his month-long work experience deal was confirmed, came on as a substitute to replace Kian Makar.

But Penrith fell to a 2-0 defeat, Guisborough having by then struck twice through Joe Pickett’s first-half double.

Next for Hopper and his 14th-placed team-mates will be a Boxing Day derby at 16th-placed Carlisle City, who were 2-1 winners over Whickham on Saturday, Jordan Irving and Kieron Blair on target for Dan Kirkup’s side.

The other Blues loanee to see action this weekend was Jake Allan, who was a substitute for Workington Reds in their 1-1 draw at Lancaster City.

The United teenager came off the bench in the 65th minute at the Giant Axe.

Reds duly fought back for a point as Steven Rigg’s 16th goal of the season wiped out Christian Sloan’s opener in the Northern Premier League Premier Division game.

Next for Allan and Reds is a Boxing Day home clash with Morpeth Town. His fellow Blues loanee Aran Fitzpatrick is yet to return to action for Workington having just recovered from injury.

A third Reds loanee from Carlisle, Sam Hetherington, was recalled by the Blues before Saturday’s trip to Port Vale, the teenager on the bench for the League Two clash, with Anton Dudik also seeing his loan at South Shields cut short because of injuries and illness at Brunton Park.

The other young Carlisle player on loan, Josh O’Brien, remains injured with Carlisle City.

A number of ex-Blues were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

In League Two, Carlisle-born Joe White was on target in a high-scoring defeat for MK Dons, who went down 6-3 at Newport County.

Cole Stockton scored the clincher for Salford City as they won 2-0 at Accrington Stanley.

In League One, the son of a former Blues man scored, with Bailey Cadamarteri – whose dad is Danny – helping Lincoln City to a 2-0 win over Reading.

In the Championship, keeper James Trafford helped Burnley to a 2-1 home win over Watford.

The Premier League saw Dean Henderson and Crystal Palace suffer a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Arsenal, while Jarrad Branthwaite helped Everton keep Chelsea at bay in a 0-0 draw.

In the National League, Carl Magnay’s Gateshead went fourth with a 4-1 win at Ebbsfleet United.

And Gary Madine struck the winner for Hartlepool United – where Gavin Skelton is first-team coach – in a 2-1 victory over Yeovil Town to see the Monkey Hangers 11th.

In National League North, Andy Preece’s Chorley were 2-1 winners over Rushall Olympic,

Liam Brockbank got Bamber Bridge’s goal in their 1-1 NPL Premier draw at Hyde United.

And in the same division Nic Bollado was Morpeth Town’s matchwinner as they defeated Gainsborough Trinity 1-0.

In NPL West, James Hooper got the winner as Witton Albion won 2-1 at City of Liverpool.

And 43-year-old Derek Asamoah was Haringey Borough's matchwinner as they claimed a 2-1 home win over Newmarket Town in Isthmian League North Division.

North of the border, Peter Murphy’s Queen of the South fell to a 2-0 defeat at Kelty Hearts in Scottish League One. They remain seventh, one place above Annan Athletic who lost 4-0 at home to Arbroath, for whom Gavin Reilly scored two.
