Teenage Carlisle United prospect Dan Hopper was on target again for Penrith but in a losing cause.

The 17-year-old loanee hit his fourth goal for the Bonny Blues in their Northern League Division One home clash with Whickham.

But Hopper’s strike proved a consolation as the visitors claimed a 3-1 victory.

The young Cumbrian scored in the 33rd-minute to cancel out Whickham’s opener which came from ex-United youth player Mason Hardy.

It was a fourth goal in three games amid Hopper’s work experience loan, after strikes against Northallerton Town and Carlisle City.

But Whickham added further goals in either half to take the points.

Next for Darren Edmondson’s Penrith is a Fred Conway Cumberland Cup quarter-final tie against Unisun Athletic, but Hopper will not be able to feature, having played for United in this season’s competition.

A host of ex-Blues were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

Jon Mellish enjoyed a winning debut for Wigan Athletic in League One.

The defender came off the bench in the 77th minute of the Latics’ trip to Stevenage.

Wigan were 1-0 up when Mellish was introduced and, after being pegged back six minutes later, struck an injury-time goal through Thelo Aaasgaard, both sides also having a player sent off.
