Carlisle United’s latest loanees suffered losing debuts on Saturday.

Taylor Charters and Freddie O’Donoghue both made their first appearances for their respective clubs.

Charters was a substitute for Queen of the South in their Scottish League One trip to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The Maryport midfielder was introduced by manager Peter Murphy in the 37th minute as he replaced Jordan Allan who had been booked.

That came moments after Alfie Bavidge’s opener for the hosts – and that’s how it remained, the 1-0 defeat sending Queens down a place to fourth.

Next up for Charters and his new team-mates is a trip to leaders Stenhousemuir next weekend.

Teenage forward O’Donoghue, meanwhile, went straight into the Carlisle City side for their Northern League Division One trip to Redcar Athletic.

But Dan Kirkup’s side were on the receiving end of an 8-0 defeat, O’Donoghue playing the full game, City 16th in the table ahead of their next outing – at home to Newcastle Blue Star on Friday night.

Jake Allan’s return to Workington Reds came as Mark Fell’s side also went down to defeat in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

The 18-year-old United player, after rejoining Workington until the end of the season, started their game against Stockton Town on the bench.

Allan was introduced in the 65th minute with Reds trailing 2-1, Stockton having fought back from Ceiran Casson’s Workington opener before adding another to win 3-1 at Borough Park.

Next for Allan and the Reds is a trip to Ilkeston Town next Saturday.

Dan Hopper and Penrith, meanwhile, were also beaten as Darren Edmondson’s side went down 1-0 at home to Boro Rangers in Northern League Division One at Frenchfield Park. They go to Northallerton Town next Saturday.

There was also a goalscoring full Motherwell debut for Luke Armstrong, as the striker scored against Celtic in a 3-1 defeat at Fir Park. It's a home clash with Ross County next for Armstrong and new team-mate Luke Plange, the former Blues man who came off the bench for his Motherwell debut against Celtic.

A number of other ex-Carlisle United men were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

In League Two, Kristian Dennis scored Tranmere Rovers’ consolation (watch below) as the third-bottom Wirral side lost 3-1 at home to Colchester United.

Cole Stockton hit Salford City’s opener in their 2-2 draw at Walsall, while – need we mention it – Dan Butterworth opened the floodgates for Swindon Town in their 5-1 win at Carlisle.

In the Championship, James Trafford kept a club record equalling 20th clean sheet of the season from just 29 Championship outings as Burnley drew 0-0 at Portsmouth – for whom Owen Moxon was not involved in the squad after a period of transfer speculation.

Brad Potts’ late goal was a consolation as Preston North End lost 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers on Friday.

The Premier League saw Liam Delap – son of Rory – net for Ipswich Town in their 2-1 home defeat to Southampton.

Jarrad Branthwaite, meanwhile, helped Everton to a clean sheet in their comprehensive 4-0 win over Leicester City at Goodison Park.

And Dean Henderson enjoyed a successful return to Old Trafford as he helped Crystal Palace to a 2-0 win over Manchester United.

In the National League, Corey Whelan scored AFC Fylde’s consolation goal in their 2-1 home defeat to Oldham Athletic.

And the NPL Premier saw Liam Noble score for Hebburn Town in their 1-1 draw with Macclesfield.
