Taylor Charters’ first start for Queen of the South came in a losing cause on Saturday.

The Carlisle United midfielder went into Peter Murphy’s XI for his full debut in their trip to Scottish League One leaders Stenhousemuir.

But it ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Doonhamers at Ochilview Park.

Charters played the first 64 minutes before being replaced with Queens 2-0 down, the visitors having also missed a penalty through Jordan Allan.

Ex-Carlisle man Brennan Dickenson pulled a goal back but the defeat left Queens fourth and unable to make up more ground on the leading sides.

Next up for Maryport midfielder Charters and the Dumfries side is a home clash with second-placed Arbroath next weekend.

Sam Hetherington’s first game with Darlington saw the United teenager a substitute for the Quakers’ National League North home clash with Marine.

The 19-year-old was introduced for his debut in the 83rd minute, Hetherington replacing Tom Platt as Darlo saw home a 3-1 victory.

The young Blues player will look to get more game time when Steve Watson’s side go to Alfreton Town on Tuesday night.

Jake Allan was not involved for Workington Reds as they lost 1-0 at Ilkeston Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, the young Blues player recovering from a knock in his previous outing, while Luke Armstrong (Motherwell) and Freddie O’Donoghue (Carlisle City) did not have games. Dan Hopper and Penrith lost 2-1 at Northallerton Town in Northern League Division One.

A number of former Blues players were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

Jack Robinson enjoyed a winning start to life with Hartlepool United.

The left-back, who joined the Monkey Hangers after leaving Carlisle last week, came off the bench in the 89th minute of their 2-1 win at Sutton United in the National League, Gary Madine hitting Pools’ first goal at Gander Green Lane.

Owen Moxon also enjoyed a winning debut for Stockport County in League One, the midfielder a 67th-minute substitute as the Hatters claimed a 2-1 win over Barnsley at Edgeley Park to record a fifth straight win.

In the Championship, an injury-time Jerry Yates penalty earned a 1-1 draw for managerless Derby County at Norwich City.

League Two saw Dan Butterworth on target for Swindon Town in a 3-3 draw with Port Vale at the County Ground (watch below)

In National League North, Reggie Lambe was among the scorers in Needham Market’s 6-1 win at Farsley Celtic.

And Mark Ellis netted a second-half winner for Chorley as they prevailed 2-1 at Kidderminster Harriers.

In the NPL Premier, George Waring hit two for Warrington Rylands in their 3-1 win at Stockton Town.

And the ex-United pair of Nathan Buddle and Nic Bollado fired Morpeth Town to a 2-0 victory at Whitby Town, a game which saw Whitby boss Gary Liddle play his 800th career game, after which he announced his retirement from playing.

In the FA Cup fourth round, Jarrad Branthwaite was in the Everton defence as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat to AFC Bournemouth.

The Saudi Pro League, meanwhile, saw Brad Young on target in Al-Orobah’s 4-2 win over Al-Wehda.
