'His loss' - Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool future uncertainty sparks reaction and FSG concern
After scoring Liverpool's fourth goal in their Premier League win over West Ham United on Sunday, Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrated with his teammates before making a "talking" gesture with his hand, sparking discussion about his future. Liverpool Echo readers have been speculating on what this could mean.
The gesture came just hours after reports in the Spanish media claimed Trent was on the verge of agreeing a move to Real Madrid when his contract expires this summer. On Tuesday evening, it emerged that Los Blancos had made an official approach to sign Alexander-Arnold in December, but Liverpool had flatly refused. This marks the beginning of the end of a contract saga in which Liverpool no longer has total control, allowing Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid to speak to each other if they so desire.
With Real Madrid's interest now out in the open and Liverpool naturally keen to keep the player, the ball is firmly in Alexander-Arnold's court. The only question remaining is what he wants to do next. While Real Madrid's involvement has complicated contract talks with Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold alone cannot resolve the situation. However, the sooner he makes a decision and shares it with the Reds fans, the better - even if it's an answer that many fans fear.

Commenter SugarRay says: "This shambles would be a lot worse had we not been sitting top of the table. This begs the question that nobody is pressing. Why were our three top players not given contracts? Where else has this ever happened that three top players got to this late in their contracts with any club? The owners clearly thought that VvD and Salah had peaked and would accept lower wages/term of contract. In Trent’s case they see Bradley coming up, and Trent being a local lad and supporter he would sign regardless, thinking if not he could leave.”
Wanielfc thinks: “If he wants to go then let him and wish him well. We've seen in the past what happened to the Liverpool greats that left the club just to become a number at the club they joined. So let Trent go and experience what it is to turn your back on a club like Liverpool and when he wants to return to find out that he's not wanted anymore. I think he should talk to Phillipe Courtinho before he makes a decision that could ruin his career forever.”
Pauul9 believes: “His loss, he’s done well, but was never a Gerrard. How many times was called out for bad defence down the years? Come on Bradley, stay injury free and Trent won't be missed.”
Everred5 agrees: “That he would choose the Ballon d'Or over captaining LFC to more titles speaks volumes and I fear his head has been turned by Jude [Bellingham]. At some point a decision would have to be made as to who is first choice with him and Conor Bradley, so if he wants out let him go in the summer, but make Bradley first choice for the big games now.”
Atilla The Bun adds: “When Trent leaves in the summer, the club won't have 'lost' anything. He didn't cost us a fee and he's more than paid back the money the club has invested in him. I'm not happy he's going to Real, but LFC will just have to struggle on without him. I rather suspect Slotto would prefer an actual tough defender at RB as opposed to the attacking wingback that is Trent, anyway.”
DaretoDream writes: “For me he’s gone. I hope that he gets a decent send off for what he’s done for the club. I still have a hope he will stay, especially as he’s a local lad and been quoted before about how his only ambition was to stay and play for LFC, but I’m clutching at straws there. I wish him well.”
BojanHorvat replies: “Kloppo treated LFC with the utmost respect and he announced in January 2024 that he will leave at the end of the season. TAA should learn from him, he must come clean, is he in or not? What to say about Edwards and Hughes? They're not doing their job so well. That's how I see the whole situation with TAA, Virgil and Salah. All three contracts should have already been resolved in December 2024.”
Kensington62 says: “Trent leaves as a legend. Stay or go he will always be a legend.”
