“There’s a lot of disappointed people in the changing room” - Gloucester City boss Mike Cook on loss to Walton & Hersham

Gloucester City manager Mike Cook was not pleased with how things ended at the TigerTurf Stadium against Walton & Hersham on Saturday afternoon.

Despite taking the lead in the 54th minute through Ed Williams capitalising on a deflection from a set-piece, City conceded two goals under pressure to lose the game.

Losing to another team in the promotion battle is the worst-case scenario right now for Cook’s side, and he was clear on his side’s performance.

He said: “They had the better chances, so that is a little bit disappointing.

"We just needed that second goal really, I think there were a couple of shots that came in that, if we had hit the target with them, I think it might have been a little bit different.

“I’m a bit more disappointed for the crowd really because we’ve got a lot of people turning up today and we just didn’t quite get there, we weren’t where we needed to be.”

One high point for the Tigers was Coventry City loanee Luke Bell, who was on fire despite not managing to keep a clean sheet.

The 21-year-old was on another level, coming out on top in multiple one-on-one scenarios and producing an otherworldly reflex save late in the game amongst other crucial stops.

With Jared Thompson still out injured, Cook wants to extend the loan agreement and keep Bell on for more matches.

Cook said: “He’s done really well, we are really pleased with him, I think Jared’s going to be out injured for a couple more weeks as well.

“We need to get that loan sorted, we’ve already asked Coventry if we can extend the loan so we are just waiting for them to get back to us.

“His kicking has been great, he hasn’t had a lot to do over the last four or five games, but what he has done is he’s done the basics really well, and he looks a good prospect for having a footballing career!”

Up next for the Tigers is Hungerford Town, who are a side in good form and will be looking to get a result.

Cook knows this well, and is adamant his team need to turn it around quickly.

He said: “It would’ve been nice just to keep the run going because those 12/13 games give you a bit of confidence.

“Today was a bit of a test and we’ve come up a bit short, so as we’ve done all season when it hasn’t gone great, we have dusted ourselves down and cracked on and that’s the attitude you’ve got to have.

“Nobody is going to be giving up, and the Totton result gives you a bit of heart as well so that’s what we will be doing.”
