Hull City have agreed a deal to sign Louie Barry on a loan from Aston Villa, seeing off a host of competition from elsewhere to snare the 21-year-old. Barry will undergo a medical on Tuesday in what's another big January arrive at the MKM Stadium.

Barry bagged an impressive 15 goals in just 23 games earlier this season during a hugely successful loan spell at Stockport County, adding to the ones he scored last season in helping the Edgeley Park club seal promotion to League One and then mount a play-off surge.

The former Barcelona youngster was one of two major winger targets during the winter transfer window, which closes on Monday night at 11pm, along with Sorba Thomas.

Thomas, who is currently on loan from Huddersfield Town at French Ligue 1 side Nantes, was expected to link up with City after the Tigers agreed on a deal with the Terriers and terms with the Welsh international earlier this month. Those talks have continued in the past week, and Thomas was left out of the squad, which drew 1-1 with Lyon on Sunday afternoon, with an expectation a deal would eventually get done, despite Nantes' determination to keep the 26-year-old, given they have an agreement to make that move permanent in the summer.

It's understood City are now considering stepping away from signing Thomas in this window after Acun Ilicali stepped in to hold talks with Villa owner Nassef Sawiri over bringing Barry to the MKM Stadium. Signing both is now viewed as extremely unlikely.

The Tigers are paying a six-figure loan fee to snap up Barry from Villa, ahead of a flurry of other potential suitors. They hope if the youngster performs and the move works out over the next three months, they will be in pole position to get him next season, if the Premier League club opt to loan him out again.

It's thought that with Barry, Abu Kamara, Joe Gelhardt and Lincoln all capable of playing in wide positions, as well as Nordin Amrabat, City are well stocked in that area heading into the final weeks of the season. Kyle Joseph can also play wide in a three if required, and Harry Vaughan has caught the eye under Ruben Selles.

Come the summer, by which point Selles will hope to have secured the Tigers' place in the Championship, City will also be closer to welcoming back Liam Millar and Mohamed Belloumi. Renewing interest in Thomas ahead of next season remains up in the air and may well depend on what Nantes decide to do, given they have the option to make his move to Ligue 1 permanent.

Elsewhere, City continue to hold talks with Southampton left-back Charlie Taylor over a temporary move to the MKM Stadium but is understood to have other options if that move does not happen. While further arrivals to boost Selles' options can't be ruled out ahead of deadline day, they will require more players to leave before the 11pm deadline given the size of the squad.

Xavier Simons is still expected to move on while Chris Bedia is likely to complete his move away from the club before the weekend. Anthony Racioppi continues talks over his exit and there could also be loan departures for youngsters on the fringes of the first team.
