Louie Barry wants to go out with a bang at Stockport County – by scoring a hat-trick against Birmingham City.

League One’s 15-goal top scorer will play his final game on loan for Stockport against Blues on New Year’s Day after being recalled by Aston Villa. Villa have taken the unusual decision to allow Barry to play one more game for County, despite the likelihood of a loan move to a Championship club on the horizon.

Blues nullified Barry at St Andrew’s to record a 2-0 victory over Stockport at the beginning of December but the boyhood Villa fan is hoping to bow out in a blaze on glory on Wednesday.

In an interview recorded last week, Barry said: “I’m still a Stockport player, I will still do the exact same (things) that I’ve been doing before. Hopefully we can get three wins and I can get a few goals – obviously on New Year’s Day against Blues I think it would be fitting if I scored a hat-trick.”

Stockport have won seven of their 11 games at Edgeley Park to give themselves one of the best home records in League One, but their away form is proving detrimental to their promotion hopes. They have only managed one point from the last 12 on offer away from home and are clinging on to their play-off spot.

Barry added: “I’ve got nothing but belief in the lads. We’ve got a young squad but there’s also leaders in there on and off the pitch. We’ve definitely got the talent in here to go on and achieve promotion.”
