Louis Rees-Zammit's NFL dream deadline inches closer after bold 13-word Super Bowl comment

Louis Rees-Zammit is likely to be picked up by a new team during the NFL offseason, as the Welshman claims he "wants to be a Super Bowl champion in the next five years".

The Welsh athlete and former rugby union player shocked the sporting world in 2024 when he elected to pursue a career in the NFL and left his position at Gloucester Rugby behind. Rees-Zammit trained and competed in the International Player Pathway Program (IPP), and was signed to the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, as a running back.

However, he was cut from the Chiefs and joined the Jacksonville Jaguars, learning his craft in the team's practice squad - and never made the move to the first-team in the regular season. Rees-Zammit's contract expired in January, making him a free agent - but it doesn't spell disaster for the athlete.

In fact, this could benefit the Welsh NFL star, as he will be able to accept offers from any number of teams in the league and join a team destined for Super Bowl glory. It has been reported that the Jaguars have offered Rees-Zammit a contract to return to their facility, but WalesOnline understands that the star is still deliberating on his next move.

NFL analyst Phoebe Schecter also told WalesOnline that Rees-Zammit is in a good position in 2025, as his contract expiring at the Jaguars is relatively normal in the sport. She said: "It's totally normal. It happens to a lot of guys. Even players on the practice squad, they might be released and picked back up again. Sometimes they have to release someone to bring in someone else. Ultimately it's all a numbers game. Financially, and a literal numbers game.

"We saw with Christian Wade with Buffalo (Bills). His contract expired and then they just signed him to their practice squad afterwards. This is really a normal thing, it's the life of an NFL player, unless you're a starter, but even then there's always going to be a lot of uncertainty around job security."

Rees-Zammit may opt to return to the Jaguars this season as they are currently changing their coaching staff, bringing in offensive-minded head coach Liam Coen. Coen has moved from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and may want to give the Welsh star an opportunity to make it in the first team.

While many NFL fans would argue that the Jaguars aren't anywhere near making the Super Bowl, getting his debut in the league performing well could tempt other teams to trade for Rees-Zammit - and eventually hand him the Lombardi trophy.

Before his NFL journey began, the 24-year-old told the BBC that he wants to win the Super Bowl in the next five years. He said: “In the next five years I want to be a Super Bowl champ. These are very much dreams but I’m desperate for these things to happen. And I want to be an inspiration for anyone coming through the IPP, and any international player that wants to get through to the NFL.”

One year on, Rees-Zammit is no closer to reaching his intended goal - but he still has four years to make his dream come true.
