Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has previously played down a move to bring Mohamed Salah to the Saudi Pro League. The former captain is currently in charge of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq as the Egyptian faces uncertainty over his future at Anfield.

Salah is into the final six months of his current deal on Merseyside and throughout the last 12 months, he has been a topic of conversation in the Middle East over a move to the Saudi Pro League. Liverpool were the subject of an eye-watering verbal bid during the 2023 summer transfer window.

The Reds rejected a fee in the region of £150million as the Liverpool record-breaker was eyed as part of the latest high-profile arrival to the kingdom's premier football league.

Gerrard, who took charge in Dammam in the summer of 2023, was previously asked whether he would look to bring Salah to his side. However, the Liverpool legend dismissed the claim - citing that he can stay at the club to win more Premier League's and European cups.

"No," he responded to a question over whether he would push to sign Salah. "The answer is no because Mohamed Salah is my favourite player, I love Liverpool Football Club, so Mohamed can stay where he is.

"When he wins more leagues and more Champions Leagues with Liverpool, we'll maybe consider it."

The 44-year-old added in October: "I’m not surprised, because I think he’s obsessed with the game. I think you can see the body shape, you can see his routine.

"You know, I obviously follow his social media, and I always talk to a lot of people. I always pick John’s (Achterberg’s) brain and what would he like on a database.

"John says he’s really obsessed to be the best, and he wants to break records. He wants to be remembered as the best. “So I’m not surprised in terms of how he approaches his profession.

"I think he’s going to be one of these players that we’ll all appreciate even more when the day eventually comes when he moves on. I hope we still get another couple of years out of Mo Salah.

"I think he can deliver for many more years because of his shape, his professionalism. So I hope he stays. I hope we get more out of him, but I’m not surprised because the ones that are obsessed with the profession and they’ve got that level of talent, it’s no surprise that the consistent levels are there all the time."

As it stands, Salah can look to fire Liverpool to a second Premier League crown and equal Manchester United's total of 20 top-flight titles. The 32-year-old tops the goalscoring and assists charts after helping guide the Reds to a six-point lead at the summit of English football.

However, the contract question remains for Salah, who has been able to negotiate with overseas clubs over a possible pre-contract agreement since the beginning of January.
