Lowdown on Bromley's goalless draw with promotion hopefuls Port Vale
Andy Woodman’s Bromley extended their unbeaten run in League Two to four matches, claiming a draw against promotion hopefuls Port Vale.
Here's Bobby Manzi's lowdown from Hayes Lane:
THE LINE-UPS
Bromley: Smith; Imray, Sowunmi, Reynolds, Grant, Odutayo; Thompson, Arthurs; Congreve (Olomola 69), Whitely; Cheek.
Port Vale: Ripley; Debrah, Hall, Heneghan; John, Croasdale, Harper (Lowe 90), Hart (Cover 21); Hackford (Paton 64), Curtis (Richards 45); Stockley.
AS IT HAPPENED
Michael Cheek could have given the hosts the lead inside two minutes when he flashed his shot narrowly wide of the post.
Bromley continued their fast start at Hayes Lane, crafting a flurry of early chances. Goalkeeper Grant Smith claimed a Port Vale cross in the 11th minute before quickly getting Danny Imray away. The Crystal Palace loanee marauded down the right-hand side, carrying the ball from the Bromley half to the Port Vale box. Imray continued on his own, drilling his shot just wide of the post.
Imray was involved again in the 28th minute when he found space and sprayed a cross to Cheek, whose backheeled effort inside the box failed to beat Connor Ripley.
In the 43rd minute, Ripley was required to bail the visitors out of trouble again, producing a stunning save to rebuff Cheek's diving header.
Although Bromley controlled the first half, Vale managed to muster a great chance just before the break when former AFC Wimbledon attacker Ronan Curtis volleyed over the bar.
Bromley came out from the break brightly - Imray continued to be busy and struck the side netting just minutes into the second half.
But Vale grew into the game and started to provide a threat, especially on the counter. All of a sudden, Smith, who had been a spectator for 60 minutes, became busy. The Valiants had struck the post while having an effort scrambled off the line, all within a matter of minutes.
The spectacle that had been one-way traffic for an hour had become an entertaining end-to-end affair.
Both sides had their chances, but it was Port Vale who went the closest to taking the lead.
Substitute Rico Richards chested the ball down and lobbed Smith, his goalbound attempt was cleared as far as Jayden Stockley, who nodded his headed effort over the line. The travelling support erupted, but the referee deemed the ball - which was miles over the line - not to have crossed it. Bromley countered and seemed destined to score, but Vale managed to recover.
The Ravens had a chance to claim all three points when a long throw was launched into the Port Vale box in the dying seconds. Omar Sowunmi won the flick on at the near post, which Idris Odutayo guided towards the Valiants net. The keeper palmed his effort away, but not only as far as Callum Reynolds. The centre-back found Cheek at the back post, albeit defender Kyle John was on the line to make a pivotal block in the game's final action.
TACTICAL APPROACH
Bromley controlled the first half in their usual back three and played on the front foot. Port Vale could not get a hold of the game, with the hosts dominating the battle in midfield. The Ravens tried to stretch the pitch as much as possible - Imray and Idris Odutayo offered an incisive threat on both wings.
Port Vale struggled to handle Bromley’s substantial attacking threat, and the hosts pinned the Valiants in for the majority of the first half. The visitors relied on frantic and desperate defending to keep their clean sheet intact at half time.
Woodman's side remained on top in the second half, but Vale provided more of a threat to the Bromley net. Counter-attacking football proved a problem for Bromley, with Grant Smith forced into two vital saves after an hour.
Despite Bromley's control, Vale had the scent and finally settled into the game. The desperate defending seen from the visitors in the first half had become contagious, with Bromley following suit.
Vale proved a big threat on the counter-attack, while Bromley continued to create chances with the game reaching an end-to-end crescendo.
STAR MAN
On loan from Crystal Palace, Danny Imray continued his impressive form against the team second in League Two. With three shots and countless chances created, Imray was the most active player on the pitch at Hayes Lane. For the entirety of the first half, he had the beating of his opposite number, constantly getting Bromley up the pitch.
Defensively, he was solid, with his recoveries proving pivotal at times for the Ravens. Imray, who is widely regarded as Bromley's Player of the Season so far, could be recalled by Palace in January and promoted further up the football league.
MOAN OF THE MATCH
Bromley must be more clinical if they are to climb the league. The Ravens squandered countless golden chances against Port Vale and should have been out of sight in the first half.
The hosts racked up 2.64 xg yet failed to put the ball in the back of the net. Performance-wise, Bromley are a very good team, they attack with damaging intent and always look threatening but lack that final bit of quality in front of goal to kill games off.
TALKING POINT
Referee Jacob Miles had a moment to forget when he waved away a clear winner from the visitors after Jayden Stockley nodded a rebounded effort into the Bromley net.
Everyone inside the stadium, besides the referee, was convinced Port Vale had a winner. Photos showed the ball to be a couple of feet over the line in what proved to be a huge reprieve for the Ravens.
WHAT THE BOSS HAD TO SAY
Woodman: "It was a brilliant advert for the league. We were excellent. We're disappointed that we weren't one or two goals ahead at half time -- I thought we were excellent. We have got to be a bit more ruthless. We do all this good work; we have to take our chances in the final third."
