Lucas Paqueta injury: David Moyes in the dark as West Ham face nervous wait
West Ham are still putting no firm date on Lucas Paqueta’s return from injury, with manager David Moyes admitting the Brazilian’s calf problem could be more complicated than first thought.
Paqueta has not featured since limping off early in the FA Cup third round draw with Bristol City at the start of the month, having suffered a recurrence of an issue picked up in the win at Arsenal in late-December.
Initial fears suggested the playmaker could be out for up to two months, though Paqueta himself played down those concerns and has since posted a number of videos on social media showcasing his rehab, offering fans hope of a swift return.
The 26-year-old is not yet back in training, however, and will play no part in Thursday night’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth or the weekend’s trip to Manchester United.
"Paqueta has been away in Madrid, he's back [at Rush Green],” Moyes said on Wednesday. “I can't give a full update as I don't know all the stuff but he's been re-scanned again. That’s as much as I know.”
Asked whether the injury was proving trickier to deal with than first thought, Moyes added: “Possibly, yeah, possibly. But he is a boy who can come back just like that and could be back immediately. I really don't know how about him and how he is at the moment.” Striker Michail Antonio also appears some way off a first-team return, with the Jamaican also yet to return to contact training.
Antonio has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury on international duty during the November break.
“Antonio is back doing straight-line running but not training with the team,” Moyes said. “He's on the ball but just straight-line running but not with the team, he’s still with the medical team.”
