Jamie Carragher has predicted that Diogo Jota will re-establish himself as Liverpool’s first-choice striker in the coming weeks and claimed Darwin Nunez is ‘not playing well enough’ to start games.

Neither were selected in the starting line-up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday though, with Luis Diaz chosen as the Reds' no.9. It was a decision that was immediately justified as the Colombian netted a 23rd-minute header to give Liverpool the lead.

Diaz rose highest in the box to plant Trent Alexander-Arnold ’s exquisite cross beyond Fraser Forster and grab his 10th goal of the season. Therefore, it’s unsurprising that Carragher claimed the ex-Porto man has been a revelation in that role given he has typically played in the wide areas since moving to Anfield.

“Now it’s Luis Diaz [through the middle] and he’s been a revelation in that false nine, centre forward position,” the ex-Liverpool defender said during Sky Sports’ pre-match coverage.

Asked why Nunez wasn’t starting, Carragher responded: “Darwin Nunez is not playing well enough when he starts. He actually scored in midweek [against Southampton] but it wasn’t a great performance.

“I think he [Arne Slot] is getting his best attacking players on the pitch. In the past, that would have been [Cody] Gakpo through the middle if it was Jurgen Klopp as the manager but Gakpo has always been on the left side [under Slot].”

Meanwhile, Carragher feels it’s Jota, who has only recently returned from injury, will become Slot’s first choice in that role going forward.

“Liverpool have now got Jota back and I think in the next week or two it’ll be Diogo Jota at the top end of the pitch.”

The Portugal international netted the equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Fulham last week and also started in the no.9 role after coming off the bench against Southampton in midweek. Jota started seven of the first eight Premier League matches of the season as the striker prior to the muscular injury that kept him out for around two months.

The 28-year-old played regularly in that position under Klopp but has tended to line up in the wide areas during his time in England.
