West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui has provided a new update on goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, after he was stretchered off during the first half of the win over Southampton.

Fabianski was involved in a collision with Southampton’s Nathan Wood after clearing a set-piece 10 minutes from the half time whistle. The Saints man was shown a yellow card for the incident.

The goalkeeper was attended to by medical staff for seven-and-a-half minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. It was confirmed at halftime that he hadn’t been taken to hospital, and even took his place back in the Hammers’ dugout for the final part of the game.

Despite the injury, West Ham were able to come away from the game with all three points. Jarrod Bowen scored the matche’s decisive goal in the second half.

Following the match, the West Ham boss Lopetegui confirmed that Fabianski did require oxygen while he was being treated, but was feeling better. He said: “Fortunately he was conscious in the dressing room. I talked with him and the doctor said he was feeling well, or better.

“So I am positive about him and he showed he had more or less recovered his senses. When it happened I was very afraid, and feared the worst. We were worried.

“He had oxygen after getting a knock to the head and was not very sure about his actions. I hadn’t seen it. And he did not go to hospital, not at the moment anyway.”

Concussion protocols could mean that Fabianski will have to sit out the next couple of West Ham games. The Hammers return to action on Sunday when they host Liverpool (5.15pm kick off), they then travel to take on Manchester City on Saturday, 4 January (3pm kick-off).
