Luke Littler is on the brink of making history as he eyes the title of youngest-ever world champion in darts.

The prodigious talent secured his spot in a second consecutive World Championship final at Alexandra Palace after defeating Stephen Bunting in the semi-finals, setting up an electrifying showdown with Michael van Gerwen. Despite van Gerwen's warning that he's ready to shatter the young star's dreams, Friday night's final is shaping up to be a must-see event as they vie for the prestigious Sid Waddell Trophy - and Littler has promised he is 'going to enjoy it'.

Littler, who narrowly missed out on the trophy last year to Luke Humphries, said: "Everyone else is looking forward to it more than I am, but if I win seven sets I will be happy. Michael has been in numerous finals, this is my second, I know where I went wrong last year and I am sure I will fix it."

The prospect of victory is not lost on Littler, who finished runner-up in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and emerged as the most Googled UK sportsperson of 2024. "It will mean everything, if I win seven sets I’ll be over the moon. I can’t wait to get on stage," Littler added.

"It’s the stuff of dreams, everyone wants to pick up a trophy, but you have to be at the top of your game to do it."

With a relaxed approach to the upcoming challenge, Littler made a vow to simply enjoy himself. "I can tell you now, I have got no pressure, I am going to enjoy it, if I can get off to a quick start I’ll be happy," the 17-year-old concluded.

Littler’s meteoric rise has dethroned Van Gerwen as the preeminent force in darts; their rivalry is on a knife-edge with an even six wins apiece. The Dutch powerhouse has maintained a low profile this season, largely eclipsed by the young prodigy's spotlight, but Van Gerwen could clinch his fourth title in what will be his seventh final at Ally Pally.

While many are rooting for Littler to claim victory, Van Gerwen is poised to shatter the young star's dream. "I have been there before, the smell is not good enough, you want to touch it," he remarked.

"Luke’s been there, he has had a sniff. I am going to make sure he keeps it as just a sniff as well. I was the favourite two years ago and lost. Now I’m not favourite, and maybe I’m going to win it. You never know."
