Luke Littler's first words since history-making world title win
NOW Luke Littler is officially world darts champion, the talk among so many is how many times he will end up lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy.
For the moment, however, he is happy just to have one and before he thinks about anything else, he is after one thing – some sleep!
Warrington’s teenage sensation became the youngest ever winner of the PDC World Darts Championship by hammering three-time champion Michael Van Gerwen in Friday night’s final.
The former Padgate Academy student averaged a shade under 103 and hit 56 per cent of his attempts at double to run out a 7-3 victor.
Littler charged into a 4-0 lead and although Van Gerwen pulled himself together, it was never enough to trouble “The Nuke.”
But was he ever nervous? There was a point, he admits, that he was.
“You know you’ve got the game and you can get rid of your nerves,” he said, minutes after lifting the trophy.
“I did start to get nervous in the last leg of the match but I just said to myself “get rid of them.”
“Going 137 and then 134 was crucial, I missed the double 16 for 132 but when Michael missed the 60 to leave 32, I knew this was the time.
“Just walking around with the trophy, seeing it and knowing its mine – I can’t believe it.”
Having burst onto the scene this time last year as an unseeded debutant by storming to the final only to be beaten by Luke Humphries, “Littlermania” started to run wild.
His social media follower count soon hit the millions and this Christmas, more than 100,000 children opened Littler-branded magnetic darts boards, shirts and other items of memorabilia as gifts.
His impact on darts has been compared to that of generational talents such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe on the football stage, and he says he is delighted to be inspiring the next generation of darts players.
“Being compared to people like Ronaldo and Mbappe, it’s unbelievable,” he said.
“I think “Project Littler” has been going on for the last year or so and I hope it continues!
“From what I know, there weren’t many young kids in the crowd last year but to see so many in the family section walking off stage has been really good, with most of them wearing my shirts.”
Now, many experts believe it will be a case of how many world titles Littler will win, with some believing Phil Taylor’s mighty record of 16 could be under threat – but what does the man himself think?
He answered, pointedly and humbly: “I could potentially break the record but for now, I’m happy with one.”
And how about his plans for celebration?
“I’ve no idea – don’t have a clue,” he said.
“I’ll try and get some sleep before I figure out what to do.”
