Swansea City head coach Luke Williams says the club needs additions before the end of the winter transfer window - but maintains they must be "proper players".

Swansea's squad remains threadbare and with three weeks of the window already gone, time is running out to strengthen before the February 3 deadline.

The manager has stressed before that the calibre of player is the most important factor when it comes to determining who arrives this month and he once again repeated that at his pre-Norwich City press conference this week. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here.

"I hope so," the manager said when asked whether he hoped deals will get done.

"I think for me the thing that is most important, really, really is most important is we need players of the level. We need solid Championship players.

"Otherwise we have a false sense of security. We need players, and we need proper players."

Identifying potential recruits is one thing, getting deals over the line is another but Williams is confident the players are out there who could add depth to their ranks.

"I believe so," he added. "We've got to get the deals done, the ones that we are chasing down. We've got to get the deals done and I'm sure we will."

In terms of timescales and progression, the head coach says strides are being made in the right direction - with Swansea closing in on a move for defender Hannes Delcroix. You can read more about that here.

"For sure, I feel like we are getting closer," he added. "Of course we have to rely on the other party involved, and often in the window, players. clubs and agents try to eke things out to make sure they get the possible decision. So we have to keep trying to get these deals done, because it's clear we need more depth. And as I keep saying, we need the correct level of depth otherwise we are bringing players into the club that aren't helping us to move forward."

Swansea and January windows haven't always been a match made in heaven, with supporters left exasperated in years gone by winter windows that have come and gone with little or no activity. The impact signings can have on fans - and indeed the current crop of players - isn't lost on Williams.

"Absolutely, that's what we have to do," he added. "Players make the biggest difference, they are the most important people, the players. They change teams, they change moments in games, they change the future.

"We need the ones who are going to get players excited when a player arrives, the guys that we have here watch that player in training and think 'OK, this is a real player, we are going to get better', and then for the fans to do the same, to feel enthused. We have to get the right ones."

One player who is on the radar is former Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah. Williams confirmed Swansea's interest following the 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

The free agent is currently training with Ajax to maintain fitness.

"We are looking at that player and trying to work out where we are and where he is so we'll see," said Williams.

"We are trying to find players we think can push us forward to the next level."
