Major contract boost for Wire as Walker commits his future
DANNY Walker has handed Warrington Wolves a major boost heading into the 2025 season.
The hooker has put an end to speculation about a possible move to the NRL by committing his long-term future to his hometown club.
Walker has penned a three-year extension to his contract with the club, which ties him to The Wire until the end of the 2029 season.
It means the England international now has the longest contract at the club that will take him to a decade of service upon its completion – and he says it was one he was all too happy to sign.
“I’m delighted to commit my future to the club,” the 25-year-old said.
“It means the world to me and my family. To represent not only my town but now my young daughters every week makes me proud and is something I love doing.
“I see a big opportunity here with the squad we’ve got and Sam (Burgess, head coach) leading us. It’s something I want to be a part of.
“I’m excited for the future here now. With the direction the club is going in we’re definitely on the right path.”
Having played his junior rugby league at both Crosfields and Rylands Sharks, former Beamont Collegiate Academy pupil Walker was picked up by Widnes Vikings’ academy and made 31 first-team appearances before joining Warrington in 2019.
Since then, he has made 128 appearances for The Wire, scoring 16 tries and picking up three England caps in the process.
After being named in the Super League Dream Team for 2024, Walker was heavily linked with a move to NRL side Canberra Raiders, who were believed to have had a six-figure transfer bid for his services rejected.
Now he is tied to the club, however, Burgess is looking forward to watching him continue to grow in stature.
“It’s great news to be able to extend Danny on a longer-term deal,” the Wire boss said.
“He is such an important part of our team. His position in the community and passion for the game is infectious.
“We’re all looking forward to seeing him grow into the player we believe he is.”
